Playing favourites with dancers

Jason Coleman agrees. "It's not about Australia's best dancer, it's about Australia's favourite dancer."

So You Think You Can Dance Australia judge Jason Coleman appeared last night on The 7PM Project and responded to criticism (much of it on this site) when he had a go at viewers for their choices over dancers.

“Our show in the past, and I’m very proud of this, had the best dancers standing there at the end. People really listened, the public really listened,” he said.

“I wish I wasn’t called a judge. I wish I was called an adjudicator, or a translator even, because I feel like my job is to help the people at home understand what they’re seeing and they generally listen.

“A few weeks ago when we had the best three dancers in the competition standing before us it’s a little bit frustrating.

“But they have got it right over the last few weeks.”

When cheekily asked by Charlie Pickering if the show should be called ‘So You Think You Can Dance For Jason’, Coleman answered, “The get-out clause for me is that it’s not about Australia’s best dancer, it’s about Australia’s favourite dancer.”

Which was kinda the point…..

  1. And can I just add how appalled I was at Jason’s condescending comments to Nat last week about how pregnant women aren’t supposed to look that good!! How rude.

  2. I also loved it when Denise Scott asked the question about male dancers dancing more “masculine” or butch hee!

I still find it annoying the Dance for Your Life and Jason calls down the dancers. It’s really, really annoying. I much prefer Natalie to announce them as they wait quietly in the background. Instead of Jason barking out orders.

  3. I’m personally all in favour for removing public voring and letting those three judges do the elimination. It works on MasterChef, let it happen in Dance as well.

  4. @Michael, pretty sure Jack (the first winner of Dance) is doing well with his career in the US and Talia is doing well with her career in Australia as well (currently in the Fame musical).

As for Idol.. Guy Sebastian the first winner seems to be doing very well for himself lately. The others varying degrees, and too early to judge for some.
