Airdate: Carl Williams: Baby Faced Killer

Updated: Nine has reacted quickly to the reported death of Carl Williams, with a special due to air tonight narrated by Vince Colosimo.

Nine has reacted quickly to the reported death of Carl Williams, the gangland murderer depicted in the first series of Underbelly.

It has slated a special Carl Williams: Baby Faced Killer to air tonight at 8:30pm.

Williams, who was portrayed in Underbelly by Gyton Grantley, died in Barwon Prison according to numerous media reports today.

Age journalist John Silvester, who wrote the book Leadbelly, reported that Williams, 39, died after he was attacked by fellow inmates in the prison early this afternoon.

As a result of the programming change by Nine, a new Mentalist episode will now air next week.

Nine certainly has its finger on the pulse for this kind of thing, and it could undermine TEN’s MasterChef premiere to some degree.

UPDATED: Seven News Melbourne Senior reporter Peter Morris will have all the latest developments tonight in a series of breaking news reports.

NINE:
The Carl Williams story of murder, gangland war and his major drug-dealing operation is told through gripping re-enactments, archival footage, photographs and interviews in Baby Faced Killer.

Police investigators, family members including his late mother Barbara Williams, father George Williams and wife Roberta Williams, the bodyguard of drug rival Lewis Moran, plus the co-author of the Underbelly book, John Silvester, all tell their part of the story – piecing together the life and murderous times of Carl Williams, the gangland killer with the baby face.

Narrated by Vince Colosimo, Baby Faced Killer gives a terrifying insight into the underworld lifestyle and crimes of Carl Williams. With a string of murders leaving a trail of bodies across Melbourne, Williams became one of the most notorious killers in Australian history in a bid to defend his drug territory.

Baby Faced Killer is the untold Williams story from those who knew the murderer with the baby face best.

  1. EPG says V is back to 10:30pm and they are putting australian families of crime at 9:30, although the description says it is about Ivan Milat, but given this is straight after underbelly it will probably be something about carl williams, if not the same one they showed tonight.

  2. Why glorify someone who has ruined thousands of lives with his drug peddling and killings? I’d be extremely brassed off if I was a fan of The Mentalist and had set the DVD recorder, only to sit down to watch the show and find out this rubbish was on.

  3. I couldnt give a damn about the life of Carl Williams. Why do people like him who have done the wrong thing and ruined lives get all the attention ? He is a murderer, and in no way does he deserve any sympathy or attention.

  4. @Emily: there has always been documentaries about crimes, after watching the special i can say they definitely didn’t glorify William, in fact they talked about how gutless, reckless and pointless his crimes where, and pointed out the fact that no good came out of it all.

  5. i found the special to be pretty interesting, even though everything featured is stuff we already know, there where so many murders that it’s hard to remember/ keep track of everything, it was a good idea to sum everything up a one 1 hour episode.

  6. I’m finding it to be surprisingly entertaining, but then again, I’m not really up to scratch with the whole story because I didn’t watch any of the first Underbelly series. Looking forward to Ivan Milat after Underbelly this Sunday night.

Considering it is well made, I think it might do well. It will definitely beat Desperate Housewives and secure Nine at least 2nd place for the night.

  7. It’s good to see that Channel Nein is not trying to cash in his death. Seriously, this mob seems as though it will do almost anything for ratings.

  8. It has definitely got to be the Carl Williams episode of Australian Families of Crime. There is no way that they could have prepared an hour episode of Carl Williams in the space of six/seven hours.

Given that the episode is from the Australian Families of Crime series and is not something that was created solely because of his death, it is unlikely that the show will be as interesting as it is being promoted and highly probable that the show will get around the same amount of viewers as a brand new episode of The Mentalist.

  9. the graphics used on the ad are the same graphics used on the Australian Families of crime ad. so i’d say it’s an episode of that because wasn’ that narrated by vince collosimo?

maybe 7 will air the karl williams episode of beyond the darklands on 7two tomorrow?

  10. OMG this is quick, makes you wonder how much they had prepared in advance.

I won’t be watching but the ratings will be interesting, guess they will be promoting the hell out of it during the News and ACA.

  11. Not happy.

I look forward to The Mentalist each Monday night and couldn’t care less about Carl williams.

Nine were certainly fast getting this up though.

  12. Way to cash in on someone’s death channel nine! I am appalled granted, he was a horrible horrible person but thats even more reason for nine to not show this program, networks should not be making shows about murderers such as Carl Williams it only gives them publicity that they definately don’t deserve. His dead, where he should be in my opinion now I wish people would just let that be and move on publicity just glorifies all the horrible things he did!
