Hungry Beast finale

In what may prove to be its final episode, Hungry Beast looks at violence and policing issues in Coolongatta and Tweed Heads.

For all we know, tonight may very well be the final episode of Hungry Beast. As it reaches the end of its second series, the ABC is yet to announce a third. Nine of the HB team are being retained by producers for online projects.

As it competes with some tough competition tonight, it will look at policing issues on the the NSW/QLD Border where on-going violent bashings in Coolongatta are met with closed doors from local police, while Tweed Heads police 3 minutes away aren’t interested in issues in another state.

Hungry Beast reporter Kieran Ricketts says of a 2007 incident, “I was gang-bashed in by five guys I’d never met in my life. The Coolangatta Police Station was closed, and the Tweed Heads police just across the NSW border weren’t interested in helping me. I had to drive for half an hour to find a Queensland Police Station that was open, and even though I could identify all of my offenders, it took a year for any charges to be laid, and some haven’t even been charged.”

Three years later, the Coolangatta police station’s doors still shut at 4pm, and the violent assaults continue with people being killed and maimed in Coolangatta’s night club strip.

Hungry Beast airs at 9pm on ABC1.

  1. I find this show very confusing.
I can’t work out whether theses are serious issues or just a clever p**s take.
But I do think they are brave and use the satirical format to raise issues that maybe other current affairs show don’t want to touch.
I do think they should make another series, but try to resolve what they are really doing, then try to go ahead and do it really well.

  2. Maybe the ABC can go back to making a new satirical show with some of the great talent involved in Hungry Beast rather than try to mix comedy and current affairs in the same show which was polarising and wasn’t particularly popular with anyone.

  3. Tweed police are hamstrung and both stations are understaffed – not on paper but actually!! Great to see Keiran finally getting this one together – he worked long and hard on it!
