Instant replay (and why you can skip some shows)

The way our Programmers are slating some of their shows, you really needn't fret if you miss an episode.

The way our Programmers are slating some of their shows, you really needn’t fret if you miss an episode. Chances are they are going to put on an Encore, or rather, a Repeat.

Australia’s Got Talent has three replays before next Tuesday’s episode:

Saturday 3pm Seven
Sunday 10am Seven
Monday 6pm 7TWO

Another TBA is slated for 6pm Monday May 3rd on 7TWO, meaning you probably won’t have to watch next Tuesday night’s either, because it will get another run.

Meanwhile Nine has been doing similar ploys with Underbelly. Both last week’s and this week’s episodes have also had their repeats. Nine replayed an episode at 10:30pm last night.

There are also legal online catch-ups for numerous shows.

When Programmers are really sneaky they won’t announce the rerun until after the first airing, in case it diminishes figures. But clearly it’s getting to be a habit for some shows.

So next time you’re torn between what shows to watch, don’t stress too long. Pick the one that won’t be getting another whirl.

UPDATED: The Pacific replayed 2pm Wed April 28.

  1. I agree with that, but most of the shows I watch are not serialised so I can afford to miss episodes (Top Gear for example). Of course if it was a show that is serialised, then I would be just as frustrated as anyone else and understand that people like to watch them in their entirety. Clear enough alfagirl?

  2. Thanks Paull. You explained it beautifully. If a person (me) decides to follow a story they (I) want to see it from start to finish in its entirety. Clear enough Tasmanian Devil?

  3. David I just thought you should know about this story because it fits in well with this article. couriermail.com.au/news/man-bitten-by-highly-venomous-snake-chooses-to-watch-underbelly-rather-than-go-to-hospital/story-e6freon6-1225854352057

  4. tasmanian devil: I’m one of those people but I also agree with you when you say you’re astounded by it because I never thought there could possibly be that much on tv for me to watch. I’ve put it down to the time of the year, at the moment a lot of new shows are starting up, and with the advent of multi channeling, there are more shows on during prime time, which would have previously been shown either later in the year or later at night.

As for people not wanting miss episodes, it’s fair enough for them to get frustrated when they do, think of a tv series ad you would a novel, now imaginejust skipping a chapter here and there during the novel, suddenly you’d find the story would make no sense and there’d be a ton of questions. For dramas like Lost, 24 and Fringe, you really can’t afford to miss an ep. However for shows like hey hey or Australia’s got talent, missing an episode doesn’t do much because the style of show is different.

  5. It astounds me how some people have so much on to watch. I only have a single tuner PVR and most of the time I don’t even need it. And when the rare occurrence of having more than two worth watching shows happens, I don’t lose any sleep over missing one. Some people must have a hard life.

  6. hopefully the pacific gets replayed sometime soon. I set my pvr to record 15 minutes more past the stated finish time and still missed the end of the ep last night.

  7. Not only does GO! repeat V on wednesday nights, it seems they’re repeating it on thursday at 2pm- it would make far more sense for them to repeat terminator at that time, seeing as it only gets played once.

  8. I like all of these words, encore and special time, fancy, flashy names to hide the ugly truth, repeat and pushed back because we trying to fit advertisements or we couldn’t be bothered to show because some underworld figure is dead and we’ll show something about him.

  9. I agree with Craig. Tell us in advance about the encores. You have no idea the juggling that goes on at my house. I have one PVR with a dual tuner and another with a single tuner. I have even kept the VCR for emergencies. I am for ever running around the house with a TV guide in my hand. Thank you David for keeping me as up to date as possible. I need to get a life.

  10. Will last night’s episode of “The Pacific” be repeated before next week’s episode? I am disappointed I missed the last 10 minutes of the episode!

  11. Well that’s interesting to note about AGT. Underbelly I pay no attention to.
Any plans for The Pacific to be repeated regularly? As the show’s up against stiff competition.

  12. It’s annoying that the networks don’t announce encores until after the first screening. One of the great things about PVRs is that it is easy for it to figure out how to avoid conflicts, but only if the guide has the data.

  13. It’s the same in the US, Parenthood has had a re-run or encore the following Saturday for the last 8 weeks of it’s run, plus having copies on the NBC site, Amazon and iTunes. It does help drag people in and when the encore ends forces people to make a choice or record one and watch the other.

I think encores are great if programs clash and you run out of recording options. But I think they should be announced in advance or people could just think it’s not worth it and wait for the DVD, or iTunes.
