Kris Smith for Football Superstar

Updated: Ex-UK rugby player player and boyfriend to Dannii Minogue, Kris Smith, is confirmed to host FOX8's Football Superstar with Lee Furlong in Brisbane.

Ex-Leeds and Halifax British Super League player and boyfriend to Dannii Minogue, Kris Smith, has confirmed he will host FOX8’s new series of Football Superstar.

Smith will replace Brian McFadden, currently judging alongside Minogue on Australia’s Got Talent.

Smith, who is also a model, told the Daily Telegraph he will be hosting the reality contest with returning co-host Lee Furling.

“This my first show and I have a lot to learn. I’ve never done any media training or learnt to speak in front of the camera. But when I auditioned with Lee it just felt right. We had an instant connection. But it is sport, which is well within my comfort zone, and I want to be as hands-on with contestants as possible,” he said.

Updated: In a Foxtel statement Smith adds, “Now that I have retired from sport, it’s a real honour to be able to use the knowledge and motivational skills that I have learnt over the years and impart some of that to a new generation of hungry young players.

“Growing up in the UK, I have soccer in my blood, and while I made a professional choice to play rugby league, I played football as a youngster and am a huge fan of the world game, supporting my beloved Manchester United whom I follow religiously.”

Lee Furlong says, “I have a huge amount of respect for Kris. His playing experience makes him a perfect fit for the show and he has a very easy-going, natural approach which is really important in this position,” she said.

“I have no doubt the contestants will be inspired by him both on and off the field.”

Across 8 episodes there will be 15 contestants trained by former Australian Youth team coach Ange Postecoglou. Principal production commences next month in Brisbane.

The third series will see a winner given a contract with Brisbane Roar and a one year university scholarship.

The show recently concluded its Series Three try-outs.

  1. Careful – he might pick up the ball and run with it. First the Irish twit, now this neanderthal. What next? – George Calombaris hosting Lateline?

  2. Why are we having hosts for Football Superstar that have never played soccer? Only qualifications that Brian and Kris have are that have a British Isle accent, and that they are connected to Australian singing stars. What a joke! Kris hasn’t even had “media training” aka doesn’t know how to speak properly!!

Lee Furlong is excellent as co host. Time to get a soccer player, and one from Australia!
