Natalie Barr and Weekend at Bernie’s

Slightly awkward moment today with a bizarre story about 2 women trying to disguise a dead relative onto a plane and a newsreader who couldn't stop laughing.

Slightly awkward moment on Sunrise this morning with that bizarre news story about two British women trying to disguise a dead relative aboard a plane Weekend-at-Bernie‘s style.

The two women were arrested for trying to get their deceased 91 yr old relative onto an easyJET flight from Liverpool in a wheelchair and sunglasses, until airport staff wised up. They were later arrested.

In reading the news story this morning Natalie Barr couldn’t hold back her mirth, which drew a number of viewer emails. One read out by David Koch even reckons she “seems to laugh at other people’s expense.”

Thankfully, Sunrise advises it also had a slew of supporting emails:

– Give Nat a break, newsreaders are human and that story was bloody funny!

– Nat you are brilliant. I have never emailed the show but you need to know that segment made my morning. Keep laughing its refreshing in the morning.

– i think its so stupid picking on a news reporter for heavens sakes since when is it a crime to have a good old laugh ?

– I think Natalie Barr did a great job reading the news this morning. I was laughing with her, and thought the story was amusing.

  1. I think she should be sacked for making such a disrespectful comment…and its not the only time she has slagged people off. That bald guy and his air-head side-kick should be shot ,their a disgrace to themselves. Some people will do Anything for a dollar.

  2. Just because the story is about a dead man, doesn’t mean it has to be solemn. Our culture makes it so. The dead man’s sister-in-law and daughter didn’t seem too upset in their interview. It Is a ridiculous story, so I really can’t see what the fuss is about. Laugh away Nat. I did.

  3. As far as my family is concerned, Nat has got the best sense of humour on the Sunrise Team. To those high brow people who have criticised her, all I can say is ‘get a life’.

  4. I saw this yesterday morning and I couldn’t believe it. How ridiculous that those two women thought that they could get the dead man on the plane.

I don’t understand what the big fuss over Nat laughing was, it was a funny story and if this story was played on April Fools Day no one would beleive it.

Well done to Nat for keeping her composure for so long, Mel and Koshie didn’t and I don’t see anyone complaining about them. I’ve watched the clip a couple of times, and I laugh even more about Mel’s uncontrollable laughing than Nat.

I don’t know how anyone couldn’t laugh at this, they are human get off their backs people!

  5. I was more disturbed to see Kochie laughing! Mumsie Mel was still trying to unsuccessfully hide her mirth, Koch was just as bad. It was a ridiculous story!

  6. It’s these kinds of humanistic aspects to Sunrise that make it so enjoyable. Surely there are more important things to complain about in the world! The letter also criticises Nat’s apparent lack of compassion and sense of humour, two features that are obviously lacking in the letter’s author. What a malicious and thoughtless thing to say. People like this need to get over themselves and wake up to the fact that news readers are human and that two women trying to smuggle a dead man onto a plane then claim they didn’t know he was dead is hilarious.

  7. As a long time Sunrise viewer, it is really well know that Nat likes to laugh at other people’s expense, and not so much at other things most of us find funny.

Her sense of sense of humour is different, but so what???

However this story was very funny regardless of that.

Good excuse from Nat though as to why she could not control herself 🙂

“Didn’t pre-read the story.”, yeah right!

  8. I laughed all day funniest story l have heard in a long time, watching Nat reminded me how hard it is to stop laughing once you start, hilarious! All day l burst out laughing just picturing Nats face trying to will herself to stop giggling!

  9. I was watching sunrise and saw Nat laughing. Kochie came in to save her at the end and finish of the news she was reading. She wasn’t laughing at the fact the guy was dead it was the fact that the mother & step daughter strapped the old man in his wheelchair and when asked why he was wearing sunglasses the response was he was blind and one of his eye lids was droopy or had a problem with it and didn’t want people looking at him. If he was blind he wouldn’t know who was staring at him. That just doesn’t make sense.

Don’t worry Nat you are still a great newsreader.

  10. On 7 News in Brissie tonight, Rod Young followed the story with a cross to sport by saying something like, “..and still kicking along with sport is…” So it was seen as ridiculous by everyone, and Nat and the team were spot on to laugh!!

  11. Nat is great newsreader and of course a story like that any one with a sense of humour would laugh, she is human. And the story was funny.Nats always been totally professional with serious stories and yes everyone else on set was laughing not just Nat.
