Robin Williams vs Kevin Rudd

The PM has taken a swipe at Robin Williams for calling Australians "English rednecks" on Letterman.

The PM needs to call April Fools on this one.

He has apparently taken a swipe at Robin Williams for calling Australians “English rednecks” on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Williams said: “The Australians are basically English rednecks … You get that ‘How are ya? Good to see you. Hello’.”

“I realised that if Darwin had landed in Australia, he would have gone, ‘I’m wrong’.”

KRudd told Triple M he was not amused.

“First of all, I think Robin Williams should go and spend a bit of time in Alabama before he frames comments about anyone being particularly redneck,” he said.

Williams was freakin’ hilarious Kevin (and how good was that accent?).

But Williams gets the last laugh, with a closing gag directed his way.

  1. At least I’ve got a good sense of humour, unlike some people who have commented. That was really funny.

You have to remember that he doesn’t mean any of it.

Something like this takes me a step closer to voting for Tony Abbott in the upcoming election.

  2. I watched that tribute to Don Lane last year, and Robin Williams was doing the same material 30 years ago. He desperately needs to update his act.

  3. That was actually pretty funny!!! Love his attempt at an Aussie accent!! Also love the way Americans come up with many warped ‘facts’ about Australia… I think some of those that Robin mentioned were a little wrong…

  4. No. I’m on K-Rud’s side.

I didn’t find his jokes about Australia so funny.

I mean, why did he start talking about australia. I mean, he thinks we all act like that.

I don’t act like that at all and i don’t want to go around back and drink my own urine.

He said a flight to aust is 1 year and a half…not funnny @ all

  5. Why make any comment at al Rudd. Bad move…

I bet he only read a few second transcript then shot off a response.

Well done for posting the whole segment.

  6. Rudd has no sense of humour – 99% woudl have laughed at it and would not have been offended. Rudd is turning more and more into John Howard!

  7. The Darwin comment related to the animals not us the people, apart from that can’t they take a joke? I mean Sarah Palin took it too far and David is still taking cheap shots at her, if everyone was offended by talk shows then they would never have guests.

  8. Robin Williams, David Letterman and KevUN Rudd – three people I couldn’t give a toss about! Quick Kev get back to ruin the country conditions might improve while you’re watching tele.

  9. I’m relatively sure K. Rudd wouldn’t have said anything about it had Robin not made the reference to him at the end.
Didn’t he say that Australians were ‘Lovely and sweet’? I’m pretty sure Rudd is just taking the defence of Australia too far. It was obviously a joke.

  10. Bad move Rudd. Comedians joke for a living, but he as a politician has countered his joke by randomly referring to a southern state in America. Should the Prime Minister be doing this?

  11. I thought it was funny, a genuine piss take..I especially liked the bit on darwinism and platypusses!

Seriously, Krudd needs to take the rod out of his bum – we have far more important things to worry about.

  12. It was a pretty stupid joke by Williams, according to Williams, the Scots, Irish and Welsh not redneck, only the English. And Rudd making comments about Alabama is just stooping to the level of Williams. But I don’t think Williams hates Australians, he was just trying to make conversation with Letterman.

  13. Robin Williams stand up is hilarious K.Rudd Get back to running the country, you are not a celebrity you are the Prime Minister of Australia stick to the important stuff

  14. I thought from the reaction by Rudd that the comment would have been the focus of the interview. Robin says later on that the people are lovely. I think Rudd needs to see the whole interview before making a comment…it was just a comedy routine…and a very funny one!

  15. Benno – that is the thing about a Lot of Aussies. For all our crowing about being able to laugh at ourselves and taking jokes, god forbid someone else make a joke at our expense – then it’s the worst transgression ever.

But yeah, lighten the F up, Rudd – it’s a damn joke.
