Sunrise adds 5am ‘extra’

EXCLUSIVE: From Monday morning Kochie and Mel can be seen from 5am, in a daily “Best of Sunrise“.

Prior to Seven Early News, the half hour edition will feature select highlights from the previous day’s regular Sunrise.

Producer Adam Boland told TV Tonight the move follows extensive research with Sunrise viewers who indicated a desire to catch some interviews they were unable to see after they had headed off to work. Now they can see them the next day.

Survey groups also indicated shifts in lifestyles with more viewers up at a remarkably early hour.

In recent years, both Sunrise and Today have accommodated early starts to meet the competition.

Today starts at 5:30am with Early Morning News at 5am. Sunrise starts at 6am with Seven Early News at 5:30am.

The new “Best of” will go up against Nine’s early News at 5am.

The gap between the two shows has also shortened. Today had wins through the Olympics. In Sydney it is now running ads boasting it is #1 for the year while Sunrise has won the last 5 weeks in that market. Today still wins in Melbourne.

Boland insists there are no plans to shift back to a 4:30am start.

  1. Sunrise extra – great idea. I am worker who has to leave home at 0645 Mon – Fri so I have very little time to watch TV (unlike some of the selfish losers who have made stupid comments here and obviously have nothing else to do but whinge – yes, many people actually Do go to work at that time of the day). I much prefer to get a quick catch up of the highlights of a quality Australian TV programme than watch more American garbage. Sunrise leads the way yet again – no wonder that other show on channel 9 (today) will never be as good!

  2. shoosh up every1
sunrise is so so much better than the today show. i wish sunrise was on 24/7 i would watch it. the sunrise set is so much better than the today shows set, sunrise’ is open,,, todays is cramped!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. It’s bad enough to put up with them for 30 minutes period. Putting up with them for 30 minutes extra per day is spewable. Give me old Footy any day of the week too.

  4. omg i can not belive this we are only gettin a hour of nbc today show now this is so unfair i usr to tape this and watch it beofre when it use to go for like 2 hours cos it the only show that has halloween and stuff on it god 7 whats rong with u just put it on 7 two at 5am or something instead of stuip afl flashback that nobody but a dog wacthes someone should start a facebook group about this and this sunrsie extra or wat eva wont work either

  5. I definitely prefer Today over Sunrise, but please Channel Nine, give the Today set a complete makeover. And by complete, I don’t just mean one or two walls, I mean the entire set. Compared to Sunrise’s fresh set, Today is looking very outdated and so not 2010.

  6. David, thanks for the update concerning NBC Meet The Press being moved to 3am. I was worried Seven was about to cut the only smart program they had left. I hope the Southern Cross Seven stations in Hobart, Darwin & Central Australia (along with WIN SA) move their infomercials earlier with Seven too.

  7. So desperate! If Seven fanbois didn’t know that Today has been kicking Sunrise recently, then now they know. Makes you wish for Prime/GWN’s programming at that time, huh?

As a regular Nine/Qantas In-Flight News viewer at 5am, I hope they leave it where it is. It’s about the only thing I watch on Nine because it’s not as dumbed down as their other bulletins. Please, Nine! For once forget about Seven’s silly little moves like this!

Writing of smarter news programs, I bet this affects the only good thing Seven has left on their schedule – namely, NBC Meet The Press.

  8. This is rather stupid. Like does anyone have to actually get up at 5 am for work and even if they do (to start work from 6 – 7 am),would they even have any time to watch any TV. I also support 7 showing the full 4 hour version of NBC Today on 7TWO at 12 am, instead of past AFL match telecasts that no one would be watching.

  9. Why are they calling it “extra” when there aren’t actually any extra bits? It’s just a condensed repeat of the previous day’s Sunrise – nothing extra there.

  10. The only reason I’d watch the NBC Today show is if there is a guest on that I want to see but what are the chances they will actually make it to our screens when only 1/4 of the show will air, I guess 25% chance, guess I’ll have to hope someone puts them on YouTube in the future. Not that there was a great chance of seeing it when it’s just 1..5 hours.

Moving NBC Today to 7TWO might be the answer, maybe running it from 5-9am in full, if they have the rights?

  11. Just looks like Seven is running scared they know Sunrise is in trouble with Today catching up in the ratings. Who knows what other stunts they’ll pull in the coming weeks.
