US remake for Top Gear (again)

Yet again America says it will tackle a local version of Top Gear, this time fronted by Rescue Me star Adam Ferrara.

Rescue Me star Adam Ferrara will front an American version of Top Gear in a deal between History and BBC Worldwide.

10-episodes have been approved, co-starring stunt driver Tanner Foust and racing analyst Rutledge Wood.

America has had a troubled past with plans for a local version as far back as 2006 when a version was floated for the Discovery Channel with the UK hosts. But Jeremy Clarkson was reportedly uncomfortable about spending such a long time away from home. Another version for NBC in 2008 with US hosts (one of which was Foust) also failed to get off the ground. Diehard fan Jay Leno was once even rumoured to be in contention.

Clarkson later remarked that Americans “don’t get it.”

The link between cars and history seems a tenuous one, but History president Nancy Dubuc said, “The history of the automobile and the history of America are intimately intertwined – to celebrate one is to celebrate the other.

“We’ll stay true to the original format and add a sense of the American car culture.”

BBC Worldwide says the adaptation will focus on a different landscape to the UK and an American fascination with automobile customization.

Aside from Top Gear Australia, Top Gear Russia also exists having premiered in February 2009.

  1. “If Shane Warne or Sam Newman ever joined TopGear Australia, most of the shows fans would never watch it again.”

ITA – instant turn off, I’ll just stick with BBC Knowledge and iTunes!

  2. TGA was ok but I’m afraid I don’t really see much point in other countries doing their own version.

What does TG Russia have that hasn’t already been done a few years earlier on the original – Zils and Ladas? Do they set their Power Lap times with Lamborghinis in snow-chains and Mitsubishi Evos with spiked tyres? (Actually, I think I might like to see that).

  3. If Shane Warne or Sam Newman ever joined TopGear Australia, most of the shows fans would never watch it again. This has been discussed at length over in the forums at FinalGear and virtually nobody thought that it was a good idea.

  4. It will be a laugh to see if the US version bags European cars as much as the UK one loves to bash the US for not making a car that can cope with corners, or build a small but powerful engine.

If this gets off the grounds what is the likelihood Nine will have the rights?
