The Wire and ER screenwriter David Mills has died after falling ill on the set of his upcoming HBO drama, Treme.
Mills, aged 48, lost consciousness and died at a hospital, and doctors said it appeared he had a brain aneurysm, according to the statement.
“HBO is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our dear friend and colleague David Mills,” HBO said in a statement.
“He was a gracious and humble man, and will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him, as well as those who were aware of his immense talent.”
Mills wrote episodes of The Wire in 2006 and 2007 for creator David Simon. He also wrote episodes for NYPD Blue and Homicide: Life on the Street. He won a pair of Emmy Awards in 2000 for his work on TV miniseries The Corner, another show from Simon.
EW.com writer Ken Tucker remembers, “Mills had a gift for making people open up to him. He got reactions. In fact, that’s how he got his first TV job. He wrote to the TV writer-producer David Milch, arguing with comments Milch had made about the limitations of black writers in the TV industry. Milch was so impressed by Mills’ arguments that he offered him a job on NYPD Blue, and Mills’ TV career was launched.”
Treme, set in New Orleans after 2005’s Hurricane Katrina will debut in the US on April 11th.

He wrote “Cradle to Grave” my mistake. Another cracker though.
He was a top notch writer. I think he wrote ‘every mother’s son’ one of the best Homicide scripts.
