With Molly Meldrum effectively banned from appearing on Hey Hey it’s Saturday, Daryl Somers has opted to feature Meldrum’s dog Ziggy in the upcoming show.

“As we are unable to use Molly on the show, we got the next best thing,” he told news.com.au

The scene-stealing pooch was a big hit on the show last year when he warred with Dicky Knee.

Meldrum is unable to return to the show due to his Seven and Foxtel commitments.

Australian Idol judge Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson is expected to take Molly’s place for the first episode.

TV Tonight
understands Dicko is honoured to be invited to appear on the long-running show, having booked many acts on Hey Hey when he was a UK record executive. But it doesn’t yet mean he is a guarantee to become a permanent fixture.

Meanwhile a rumour emerged yesterday that Skyhooks could even reform for the show with Leo Sayer as guest vocalist. The band previously reformed for Hey Hey when it debuted Jukebox in Siberia.

  1. The dog might make more sense!!
And the Sayer thing would fit – he did say late last year that he had some interesting projects coming up!!! Actually why not make Leo the music guru – he is a very outspoken and interesting guy!!

  2. With Dicko doing the music segment there might at least be some semblance of realistic chart prediction or musical criticism, instead of Molly just bigging up whichever record company puppet he met at some party last week. He might be an icon, but that emperor wears less clothes than his dog.

  3. Would there be any vague chance that Dicko would actually be allowed to present his piece, in peace ? Probably not. Anyone with more than a passing interest in “pop music” was always disheartened at Molly’s segment being disrupted.
