AFL Grand Final wants 3D

The Seven Network is hoping to join the 3D rush by broadcasting this year's AFL Grand Final in 3D.

The Seven Network is hoping to join the 3D rush by broadcasting this year’s AFL Grand Final in 3D.

This year Seven has the rights to the game after TEN’s 2009 Grand Final, as part of a shared AFL deal.

“We are working towards the possibility of this year’s AFL Grand Final in 3D – we’re intent on that,” Seven Melbourne general manager Lewis Martin told heraldsun.com.au.

“Our other marquee sports are genuine possibilities as well.”

They could include the Melbourne Cup, Bathurst 1000, V8 Supercars motor racing and the Australian Open tennis.

“The notion of having a 3D experience from inside a motor car, a 3D experience of horses coming into the straight and a 3D experience of being behind the player receiving serve will be really interesting,” Lewis says.

FOX Sports broadcast Monday night’s Australia vs New Zealand soccer match in 3D while Nine’s State of Origin game will be the first free to air live sports broadcast in 3D. Two more follow next month. SBS also adds World Cup games in June.

The Nine and SBS broadcasts were allowed under an industry trial approved by ACMA until mid July.

  1. As far as I’m convinced, the people whinging about 3DTV are simply jealous they can’t afford to upgrade themselves 🙂 And anyone who has seen Avatar will know that the 3D effect was not used for novelty purposes (ie, objects flying out at you)… in fact, I don’t remember a single scene in which that happened. It was used for depth perception and creating the illusion that you were there with the characters. I can however, understand the frustration at films such as Clash Of The Titans where the 3D effect was added after the fact, as a way to boost sales by cashing in on raised 3D ticket prices. If any of you have actually witnessed things such as soccer and other regular TV broadcasts in 3D, you’d understand the appeal.

  2. I heard they have abandoned plans for 3D AFL on the grounds that 2 more dimensions of boredom and mediocrity on the vic/sa/wa public would be too much.

  3. 7 interested in new technology? That’s a laugh. Their current efforts with HD are dismal and it would be better for viewers if they got that right.

  4. Am I the only one who thinks that 3D, like in Avatar, just looks like cardboard cutouts infront of each other? I find normal films & televison far more realistic and in proportion. PS who wants to sit around, have a beer and watch the footy wearing those glasses?

  5. Seriously… it’s 3D the “Holy crap something is flying at my face” effect lasts about twenty minutes… anybody who watched Avatar will know that…

And why stop at sports, whay not romantic comedies and sitcoms and Judge Judy…? Oh wait, let’s not stop there, lets get 3D fishcam and 3D text!

Geez… the entire idea of 3D isn’t That great, people are just fascinated by new crap and heavy marketing, it’s why Underbelly and MasterChef is watched so much, and why the iPhone is a best seller, despite being a piece of junk, and I do not speak metaphorically.

  6. maybe they should improve their overall coverage before they try something else with their coverage.

either way they will stuff it up like they do with everything else
