  1. Take no notice of the ads. This is a terrific show, the characters are complex but real enough to get a laugh. Phil is very much Michael Scottish from ‘The Office’ . Give the show time to develop, most people with a family will laugh even if they don’t relate exactly.

  2. Funniest show I have seen in a long time. I saw the first season in NZ and I couldn’t get enough.. and I am usually into British comedy. Honestly a hilarious show, so cut the crap about it being a flop.. very unlikely.

  3. Definitely the best comedy to come out for ages. It’s Arrested Development-like but grounded in reality. The gay couple Mitchell and Cameron are not your stereotypical, narcissistic, trimmed, and manicured gays, but much more representative of real people you can actually relate to and like. Same for the other two families. What I adore about this show are the fabulous and memorable quotes that come from all the characters, hilarious!

The only negative I could find was the iPad episode, which seemed like a twenty minute ad for Apple.

  4. The promos don’t do the show justice. Instead of making generalisations people should give it a few episodes, because it is a very funny show.

  5. Tch, tch.

Looks like a typically safe and lame American sitcom to me, relying on gimmicks in lieu of properly developed characters. I saw one of Ten’s extended promos of the show a while ago, and it was more than enough to put me off.

  6. i haven’t watched it, but people comparing it to the NBC comedies. they have never rated that well in america, so Australia is only following suit. but modern family is rating very well over there dispite a recent dropoff. so i think it has a good chance at being a hit in Australia.

  7. Meh – ads don’t do anything for me, I predict a bit of a flop.

Totally disagree that it appears to be a ‘smart’ comedy. Comes across as fairly lowbrow on the ads.

Comparisons to Raymond and the Office make it sound even less appealing!

  8. Afraid not David, I just watched it again on Ten’s site to be sure. I don’t know if you’ve seen the pilot or not, and it’s more of a small surprise than a huge twist, but it’s a good moment, and there’s more than enough ‘safe’ footage in different episodes (or even just the first one) that they could have used for the promo that wouldn’t have revealed it.

  9. @ Jack : Ch 10 didn’t ruin it. Ch 10 replicated ABC’s original promo. If you youtube the series premiere promo, you’ll notice it’s nearly the same, but Ch 10 added their own graphics and v/o.

  10. @ JB. 100% agree

Modern Family is fantastic, probably a little too fantastic for mainstream viewers who lap up 2.5 Men repeats. Modern Family will probably join 30 Rock, Arrested Development, Scrubs, The Office etc. as highly renowned sitcoms, whilst remaining low rated.
