Barbara Walters to undergo heart surgery

The View's Barbara Walters has told her audience she will have surgery to replace a faulty heart valve later this week.

The View‘s Barbara Walters has told her audience she will have surgery to replace a faulty heart valve later this week and take the summer off to recuperate.

Walters, 80, has known about her condition for a while but thought it best not to talk about it too far in advance.

“Since the summer is coming up,” she said, “I can take a nice vacation.”

The veteran journalist said she had not felt any symptoms from the narrowing of the heart valve, which can worsen and restrict the flow of blood to the heart. There are four heart valves, and they can be surgically replaced by a mechanical valve, an animal valve or human organ from a donor.

On The View Whoopi Goldberg asked her if she was scared about the surgery.

“Oh, only you would ask that question,” Walters replied, laughing and making the point that “it’s not elective, it’s not like … having your face lifted.”

After praising her doctors and mentioning the support of her daughter, she continued: “I don’t think I’m really scared; I’m glad it’s going to be over with. It’s going to be taken care of.”

Recovery is expected to take between one to three months.
