FOX Sports to beat Nine to 3D

FOX Sports will upstage Nine with the first sports event broadcast in 3D on Australia television.

Next Wednesday Nine will air its State of Origin game as a “world first” 3D broadcast of sport on Free to Air Television.

But FOX Sports will seek to upstage them by airing the Socceroos and New Zealand at the MCG in 3D on Monday night.

It will become the first sports event broadcast in 3D on Australia television.

The game will be available on a new channel, FOX Sports 3D, available to Foxtel iQ2 and Austar MyStarHD subscribers and simulcast in 2D on FOX Sports 3 and FOX Sports 3HD.

It will be viewable on television sets with 3D capacity.

The chief executive of FOX Sports, David Malone said, ”Fans around the country will now be able to experience the final home game in a revolutionary way.”

SBS will also air select World Cup matches in 3D next month.

  1. why dont we in SA get to see the games live. I have Fox and have to wait till 10.30 pm to watch it….dont have an HD or 3D tv so it pretty much sucks

  2. I would be smart for Fox Sports/Sony to arrange 3D viewing venues across pubs and clubs Australia wide, similar to what happened in England for Sky Sports Football 3D games.

  3. Yes – only a few people will see it in 3D, but its all got to start somewhere.

I remember similar jokes in Jan 2001 when digital broadcasting of TV started: “Available in widescreen” … “for the 3 people who have digital TV”

  4. Sux on that C9! Do you really think that a league game that nobody gives a fig in most states was going to be the first 3D sports broadcast in Australia? Please.

Lets see if C9 withdraw their ad that claims a ‘world’ first in television. LOL!

  5. @Smithton: I think that it might be you who needs to read more, specifically the actual recorded ratings for SoO and the AFL GF. I don’t know where you got your figures from but the SoO has only ever outrated the AFL GF in the two NRL states.

Using the figures from this very site for 2009:
    SoO Tot – 2,091,000; Syd – 812,000; Mel – 321,000; Bri – 800,000
    Ade – 67,000; Per – 90,000
    AFL Tot – 2,704,000; Syd – 309,000; Mel – 1,426,000; Bri – 254,000
    Ade – 403,000; Per – 312,000

If you check previous years you’ll see the same story.

@Bob: If you call those figures for the non-NRL states “rating quite well” I suggest you don’t waste your time applying for a job in television programming. Or anything requiring numeracy.

  6. wow – why all the hate for the round ball – you lot will be livid after 30 days of blanket coverage of the world cup.

16:9, HD, 3D, why don’t people just go to the match?

  7. State of Origin has outrated the AFL grand final some years nation wide. Not sure if it did it last year but it’s always up there with it. Secret Squïrrel, I think you need to read things a bit more.

  8. @Nathan from ESP: You need to come out from under that rock. SoO will only rate in two states. I don’t know how many donkeys it will kick.

  9. @Craig I think last week Nine announced they’ll now broadcast State of Origin 3D to the main 5 city centres.
I don’t see the point of 3D TV. It’s not as if I’ve seen 3D work in the cinemas all that well. High Definition I get because of the surround sound.
What happens if you want people over to watch? You’ll need to buy 10 pairs of 3D glasses… because they’re cheap..!!!??

  10. Hmmm, just trying to calculate the number of people with Foxtel iQ2, a 3D compatible television, and an interest in ‘the world game’. Would have to be in the dozens. Foxtel really do(n’t) know how to spend their subscription dollars wisely.
