Ray Meagher snatches Gold

Ray Meagher has won the Gold Logie at the 2010 Logies after 22 years of playing Alf Stewart.

Ray Meagher has won the Gold Logie at the 2010 Logie Awards.

The veteran actor finally won recognition for his 22 years of playing ‘Alf Stewart’ on Home and Away.

“These things have never meant much to me over the years, mainly because I’ve never held one,” he said. “All of a sudden they seem unbelievably important.”

“In 1965 at a hotel in Brisbane, I won a chook raffle,” he said. “It has been a long time between drinks.”
“Sadly, on that night in the Regatta Hotel, I was the sole ticket seller. And I drew the raffle.”

Meagher was convinced the award would go to Rebecca Gibney. He thanked his co-stars, producers, directors, crews and network execs.

Home and Away is a wonderful little show, sold to the world and does wonderful things for the bottom line of the Seven Network,” he said.

Meagher also thanked fans who ran Facebook and Twitter campaigns.

His win was a sentimental one, as the room recognised his years performing in the industry.

  1. JB, I would have to disagree with you. When Kate Ritchie won, it was after her character had been knifed in the season cliffhanger which bought some harrowing scenes and performances, which she had many of in that year, with wedding that never happened etc. and with Ray Meagher his presence has really been felt over the past year as unifying force in Summer Bay, exemplified in the ads they were showing over the summer inviting people back to the bay. The timing was right for both of them as a culmination of their years giving life to such iconic Aussie soap characters.

  2. Congrats Ray, well desrerved and what an entertaining exceptance speech. Could this lead to more light entertainment work for him, i wonder?

  3. Congratulations Ray – but Congratulations David!!! Brilliant up-to-date Logies coverage without getting ahead of the pack!! ABC facebook site advertised that their boys didn’t win the comedy award about 35 minutes before we saw it on TV!!

  4. Good to see someone different win the gold, All too often in the past the gold logie has gone to the same ol’ crew year after year which makes it pretty boring. Let’s hope the magazine nominates someone else who is ‘outside the box’ for everyone to get behind next year and keep it interesting.

  5. stone the flaming crowes, i am bob hawkes brother. he deserved this big time and he is a fantastic actor he perfect for that role. the so call under dog from last year, i an smith didn’t deserve it last year

  6. If sentimental campaigns are the go these days at the logies, it is time Facebook or somebody started a campaign for Kerri Anne – thirty years in the biz and no Logie! If Ian Smith, John Wood and Ray Meagher can get a wave of support – why not other long time losers or never nominated long timers. At least the love was kind of shared around last night – Micallef & co, Rafters, Home & Away, SBS, ABC – poor channel 9 not a great year for them – their worst showing ever I think!
    KAK for gold in 2011

  7. Well done to Ray! He really deserved it. I thought Shaun Micallef was going to win it as he won all the other awards he was up for.
I liked the joke he made about Twitter.
By the way in the article it should be ran not an in regards to Twitter and Facebook campaigns.

  8. No disrespect to Ray, but this is exactly why the Logies are meaningless particularly the Gold. His been doing the same role for 22 years, why now is he suddenly deserving?? Has his acting improved dramatically?? Just like Kate Ritchie, was glad to see her win, but she only won cos she was quitting the show. Meh anyway. Congrats Ray

  9. The “Race For Gold” has taken the fun out of the Gold Logie, I reckon. I’d rather see the nominees cut back to 5, or if you want 10 nominees, you hand out a second Gold Logie again, one for each gender, five nominees each.

I’d much rather see the nominees sweat with Gold simply being a name written in, not a number, (with no nominations event in 2011) than decisions down to the wire.

  10. So the Facebook and Twitter campaigns succeeded to help Ray winning Gold Logie. Whom will people set up campaigns for in 2011?
Ray also made a joke about the Melbourne Storm salary cap scandal, saying the entire cast is under the cap.

  11. I think its great to that Ray has been acknowledged by the public for his work on Home and Away for over 20 years. He is a fantastic actor and plays a wonderful character. I loved his speech and its great taht everyone in the room was excited for him. Well done Ray.
