“Satellite” wins Eurovision for Germany

One of two favourites, Germany's Lena Meyer-Landrut has won Eurovision with her quirky performance of "Satellite" in a night marred by a gatecrasher controversy.

Germany’s Lena Meyer-Landrut has won Eurovision 2010 with her quirky song “Satellite.”

Germany scored 246 points ahead of Turkey on 170 points and Romania on 162 points.

19 year old Lena was one of the two Favourites tipped to take out the contest. The song had already been a chart-topper becoming Germany’s fastest selling digital release ever and charted in Austria and Switzerland.

But the 55th contest was marred by controversy.

Taking the theme “Share the Moment” literally, a gatecrasher leapt onstage to join in the Spanish entrant’s performance. Dragged offstage by security, he was said to be a serial pest by the name of ‘Jimmy Jump.’

Oslo turned on a brilliant show, dominated by ballads, at Telenor Arena. While the Postcards were slight inclusions this year, Norway more than made up for it with a stunning interval show that saw flashmobs performing choreography from cities across Europe.

This year European viewers were allowed to vote before acts to the stage.

It was the third straight year in a row that the Bookies have tipped the winner, with Germany and Azerbaijan both topping odds.

This year Australia was even acknowledged when co-host Nadia gave us a shout-out.

In final place was the United Kingdom on 10 points.

Israel and Iceland….so robbed.

    1. Well it is a pop contest after all. But there are plenty of young and cute acts that haven’t won, and even some old cronies who have (Denmark). Germany’s song was not an unworthy winner. The fact the UK got last kinda validated much of the voting for me….

  1. Just to chip in re: commentary; even though Wogan and now Norton get top billing for their job in the final, I’ve always thought that the BBCs semi-final commentators do a fine job.

  2. Iceland got robbed big time – this was the best track of the night by far! I do think thought that her Semi Final performance was superiour to last night but it seems classic europop is out for the time being.

As for Lena the amount of bum notes should have been enough for her to be disqualified from the win. Having said that it seems that the fun and quirky will now win following on from last years win by Norway.

David, any chance SBS will repeat with Graham Norton doing the commentary?
Julia and Sam were ok but i reckon Graham would have been far superior.

  3. I’m interested in Eurovision and my parents are from Asia. It makes no difference if you’re in Europe, Australia or Asia. It’s a big deal all over the world.

  4. @ Joss.
Everyone cares about Eurovision. It’s one of the biggest entertainment events in the world. It’s one of the most ntertaining events on the calendar and also a lot of fun for a laugh. It has also created a lot of stars in its 55 year history.
Why shouldn’t Australia care about Eurovision and Europe? Australia still has a vast majority of people with a European background. Most people have some connection to one of those countries competing in Eurovision, so thats another reason to be interested.

  5. Personally I thought Albania had the most commercial song. The German song was very Triple J friendly though, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was released here.

  6. Joss,

If you haven’t realised by now, David blogs Eurovision for SBS’s website and I think deserves a day to concentrate on that job instead of moderating comments on here.

  7. My personal favourite was Greece – Opa!! – but I don’t think Europe was in the mood to give naughty Greece any love.

I didn’t mind the winning song. It was quirky, catchy and contemporary and not very “Eurovision” at all. It should actually do well in the charts, for a change. Although her semi-Cockney accent is err, bizarre. Like a German Lilly Allen impersonator?

I had a soft spot for Moldova (violinst spinning on a lazy susan, gyrating saxophone solo – awesome!!). I was surprised how badly they went. Nobody else loves Moldova? The UK song was God awful, the Spanish guy looked like Leo Sayer and the stagecrasher actually boosted their performance, Belgium put me to sleep and that Apricot Stone number had me and my friends in hysterics.

    Until next year!

  8. David, I can’t believe I’m getting involved in this hilarious discussion, but you have to admit, Israel’s song was tedious at best, and his vocal delivery was pretty off. It’s just that he was a very, very, very good looking man.

  9. Great job I thought by SBS – Sam Pang & Julia Zemiro were extremely good last night. I watched with someone who’s use to the Terry Wogan commentary in the UK and she thought they were very good. Lots of chuckles!
Having said that, we were going to vote online for “Australia’s favourite”, but it was closed. Why? Because we’re in WA and once again, WA gets snubbed!

  10. Joss I think David should be entitled to maintain the site as a spoiler-free zone and, more importantly, just have Sunday to himself. Is nobody allowed a day off?

Perhaps you’re the type Joss that would have enjoyed spoiling the result for the rest of us?

  11. OMFG who cares??

Why is this joke fest making news in Australia? Everyone knows it’s a massive joke.

Also David, I’ve never seen such secrecy about anything on this website before. Not posting any comments for a whole day. Quite weird actually.

    Tragic
