Former Will and Grace star Sean Hayes has been picked to host the 64th Tony Awards.

Hayes has been appearing in the revival of Promises, Promises, but after recently coming out of the closet was slammed by Newsweek columnist Ramin Sedooteh for playing a straight role.

His announcement as host is already being seen as support from the US theatre community. Co-star Kristin Chenoweth also leapt to his defense with an impassioned plea for tolerance.

Hayes also has a nomination for Promises, Promises as Lead Actor in a Musical. It won’t be the first time a host has been in the running for a top award.

In 2004, Hugh Jackman won the same award for The Boy From Oz while fronting his second Tonys telecast.

The 64th Annual Tony Awards will air live to Australia on Monday June 14, at 10.00am AEST on Bio.

  1. Love Sean Hayes – such a one off comedic actor. Thought he had come out years ago, or was it that we all assumed he was gay. If we can’t have Neil Patrick Harris, Hayes is the next best thing!
