Veteran actress Dame Pat Evison, best known for character roles in The Flying Doctors and Prisoner, has died, aged 85.

New Zealand-born Evison appeared in a number of Australian TV shows including Carson’s Law, A Town Like Alice, Solo One, Matlock Police, Division 4, and films including Caddie, Tim, Starstruck, The Clinic, and The Earthling.

She appeared in The Flying Doctors as Violet Carnegie from 1986 – 1991 and in 28 episodes of Prisoner as Jessie Windom in 1986.

Evison was among the first New Zealand theatre students to receive an overseas scholarship, moving to Britain in the 1940s to study as a director at the London’s Old Vic Theatre Centre. She later became an assistant director with the Young Vic Theatre Company.

She was awarded an OBE in 1980 for her services to the theatre and was made a Dame in 1993. She remained active on stage until failing eyesight in her early seventies forced her to retire from the profession.

She died following a long illness.

  1. what a wonderful actress she was, had no idea she was a ”’dame, unforgettable in Michael Pate’s ‘Tim’ with Mel Gibson and of course another Prisoner favourite.
    A great face, a fine actor.
