Aussie TV crews in taser clash in Durban

Updated: A clash between TV crews from Nine and Seven outside Durban stadium network saw bodyguards wielding tasers.

Forget about the Socceroos v Germany, there was a clash off field yesterday between TV crews from Nine and Seven outside Durban Stadium.

A Nine spokesperson told TV Tonight the fracas began after Nine’s cameraman had baulked at a Seven cameraman stepping into shot while filming a doorstop interview with Steve Waugh and reporter Alison Langdon. It escalated to Seven reporter Mike Amor allegedly grabbing the Nine cameraman, whereupon bodyguards escorting both networks got involved.

A News Limited article says Mike Amor was confronted by Nine’s three guards, with a taser shoved into the stomach of a Nine guard by the Seven bodyguard. Witnesses saw a brief spark, but the Nine man did not drop to the ground.

But Nine denies it had three heavies.

“Categorically and demonstrably untrue on every count. Nine had but one security guy -the bloke who was tasered. And he monstered no-one,” a spokesperson told TV Tonight.

Nine’s South African bodyguard said not only was the firing of the taser highly dangerous, but had it hit any nearby soccer fan in the crush of people, “it would have caused a riot.”

Amor says the argy-bargy was silly and has been sorted.

A Seven spokesperson told TV Tonight, “Nine is getting itself wound up. They can put about what they like but it appears on-the-ground over there in South Africa that no harm done. The Seven and Nine crews had a post-match beer.”

Earlier this year Amor was part of the frenzied “Haitian baby” survivor story alongside Nine’s Robert Penfold also on site in Haiti.

  1. Given the history of Channel Nine cameramen, I’m not surprised to hear they caused this entire altercation. They are like a pack of mutts, Calvert needs to tighten their leash.

And as for Amor, well I’m sure he loved being centre of attention in this, he sure loved making a spectacle out of the Haitan baby suvival story.

Both as pathetic as each other.

  2. A new reality show “When TV Crews go Bad!” that could be fun!

Also fun to see the big guys scrapping over the leftovers since SBS has the rights to this one. Funning how soccer is boring (according to the other TV networks) then once every 4 years they think it’s the biggest thing around LOL

  3. Reminds me of the Jessica Watson return to Mooloolaba special on last weekend. Seven and Nine both bounced on her as she walked off the boat. Each network had no option but to show the other networks questions and answers as they took turns asking questions live to air. (I only watched cos I live on the Sunshine Coast)!
