Christian character set for Glee

Glee‘s inclusive characters has always been part of the show’s popularity.

But creator Ryan Murphy is about to balance the mix in the show’s second season.

“I’m adding a Christian character,” he says. “We’ve taken a couple jabs at the right wing this year, so what I want to do with this character is have someone who Christian kids and parents can recognise and say, ‘Oh, look—I’m represented there, too!’ If we’re trying to form a world of inclusiveness, we’ve got to include that point of view as well.”

The female character will speak her mind, be listened to and respected — though likely not by ‘Kurt’ (Chris Colfer) whose homosexuality she won’t accept. She will also object to some of the club’s sexually suggestive music selections.

This is a pretty smart move by Murphy. Having a divisive teen will no doubt generate a lot of story conflict. And hopefully no more sodas thrown in faces in the corridor. Although they are probably trademark moves by now….

  1. @jason weiss.
I like how you have no excuse or justification for churches that “pray the gay away.”
Am i a member of the pray the gay away Churches?
Standing idly by while others in your flock do bad things…we call that complicity.
Standing idly by as others of my flock do “bad things” is called “letting people have free speech”.
PS The Australian christian lobby (that represents all christian groups to parliament) is extremely anti-gay and proud of its bigotry.
PS. The Australian christian lobby, doesn’t represent me. My rep lives in rome.
Do gays ever stop christians from marrying?
They have every right to say gays can’t marry.
You may want to change your spokesperson or concede to standing for nothing but bigotry.
No thanks i’m happy with the one i have now.

  3. “Not every Christian is a bigot”

You should be saying that to the preachers on tv in the morning who spread nothing but bigotry, or the Hillsong church and other organizations that actively try to “pray the Gay away.”

    Who’s not a bigot?

  4. I don’t know why the teacher is kissing the boy. But by the looks on the boys face. i’d say something else is happening behind the curtains.

  5. I agree with James, but knowing Glee she will have a ‘light bulb’ moment when she questions her ways. And I doubt her homophobia would be tolerated by the Glee club even if she’s written that way, and it certainly won’t be by the audience.

  6. I’m with James on this one.

Bigots don’t deserve representation to a wider audience. Will only be good if the program shows just how backwards and dangerous the ‘Christian’ character is.

  7. when i read the part where he says “Christian kids and parents can recognise and say, ‘Oh, look—I’m represented there, too!’”
I thought i bet this “Christian” is either a homophobe, racist, thinks holding hands will get you pregnant. or that dancing is from the “debul”. Or more likely it will be all of the above. I only had to read on for a few lines to find out i was correct. But it will turn out all for the best. She will be shown up for her arrogance. Becomes best friends with the gays. Discover an unknown talent for dancing in a sexual provocative way, and be regent by season two at the latest. After many fights with her over bearing religious zealot parents. Who wants to take me up on that bet?

  8. Wow, I never thought “diversity” included tolerating hatred of gays. Since when is it okay to tolerate hatred of others for being different under the guise of religion (and encouraging others to hate gays in the process).

I don’t think the producers of Glee would give airtime to the Ku Klux Klan who believe their religion tells them to hate people based on race.

Attacking gays seems to be the exception.

The world we live in… 🙁
