Eurovision experts choose another ‘best song’

Eurovision composers, media and broadcasting commentators have all chosen one song as the best entry this year -and it isn't Germany's.

‘Satellite’ may have won Eurovision 2010 for Germany, but there was another song that proved universally popular with composers, media and broadcasting commentators.

All three groups selected Israel’s “Milim” performed by Harel Skaat as their choice.

It is the first time ever that one entry has won all the categories in the Marcel Bezençon Awards.

The commentators reward the best artistic achievement of the contest, while the composers vote for the best song. Never before has an entry won more than one category in the awards.

“Winning these awards is really important for me,” Harel Skaat said.

Christer Björkman, supervisor of Melodifestivalen said, “I definitely think that this shows that this award has a function. It reveals something that didn’t come across in the vote of the contest. Perhaps this speaks for that Israel had a lot of votes from the jury groups across Europe. This song is very beautiful, and we’ve been here two weeks now, but it might be that this song doesn’t reach out in the same way the first time you hear it.”

The 2010 Marcel Bezençon Awards:
Press Award – Given to the best entry as voted on by the accredited media and press during the Eurovision Song Contest: Israel, Harel Skaat – Milim.
Artistic Award – Presented to the best artist as voted on by the commentators: Israel, Harel Skaat – Milim.
Composer Award – The best and most original composition as voted on by the participating composers: Israel, Harel Skaat – Milim. Composer: Tomer Adaddi. Lyrics: Noam Horev.

  1. Israel sent on Evrovidenie2010 your diamond – Harel Skat – big Talent, singer, musician, poet, composer, actor, Personality .. I am happy to know Harel Skaat!
He number One ESC 2010 and on my heart !
I Love his divine voice, beauty and positive!
The Best singer! The best Song! L O V E!

  2. I couldn’t agree with RoD more; Tom Dice representing Belgium was the song of the night for me also. I think both he and Jon Lilygreen representing Cyprus (via Wales) suffered by splitting the ‘hot young guy playing guitar’ vote & being too similar. Had Lilygreen not made it to the final (he scraped by in the semis in 10th place), I think Belgium may have had a real chance at the title.

The ‘Euro’ bit of Eurovison does not relate to continental Europe. It includes countries in the European Broadcasting Area or Council of Europe. As for Israel’s song being best, don’t believe everything a so called expert says.

  4. One of my favourites, the guy has an incredible voice, he was like a male Celine Dion. Although he sang flat in the semi, you could still hear the amazing range and suppleness.

I really liked Iceland, too, great voice that lady had, and a lively song. Norway was good too, and the chap was rather dishy. Didn’t like germany much, too much like the drossy top 30 pop we get here.

  5. No way was that the best song. Azerbaijan had a very contemporary feel and I really loved Sweden, which didn’t even make it to the final! Israel was a bit of a boring durge and he missed a crucial note at the end

  6. I agree that Haret was superb in the Final – while his semi performance was so forced he really was lucky to get through. Keep in mind we miss seeing the ‘dress rehersal’ which is where the jury scores them – and the commentators, et al watch that as well. So he may getting points for consistency.

IMO Belgium’s Tom Dice missed no notes, had the crowd in his hand and wrote a really touching song about an artist’s self-doubts. That was my pick for best Composition and best on the night,

Agreed – Germany was all over the shop ‘live’ (best studio song of the year, though).

  7. I thought that Armenia and Denmark had the best entries, based on composition and performance. Sweden’s entry was also quite good, however, they didn’t make it to the final. But I would have never expected Israel to be chosen as the expert favourite.

Unfortunately, the voting by countries and SMS votes are often influenced by bilateral ties between countries, so it’s at least good to get the point of view from other experts.

  8. His performance at Eurovision was pretty bad – flat, particularly at the end of the song during both semi’s and final. No way it could have won on the night.

Eurovision is a ‘song’ contest that is equally about the performance.

  9. Milim? Really? Based on his flat, lifeless performance from the semi – dude shouldn’t have even made it into the final. I still stand by the call that Lithuania was robbed.
