Nine’s AFL Footy Show revealed on Thursday night that it had hoped to bring Gary Coleman to Australia for its Grand Final spectacular.
The show has featured a “Gary Coleman Medal” awarded each week to “the best dummy spit.”
The award parodies the AFL‘s own Coleman Medal, named after Essendon great John Coleman, which is given to the player who kicks the most goals in regular matches.
A Nine spokesperson told TV Tonight it had been pursuing plans to bring Gary Coleman to Australia as a guest for its Grand Final edition, which would have seen him present the Medal to the year’s biggest dummy spitter.
This week The Footy Show said it would retain the award but rename it the Gary Coleman Memorial Medal.

Apparently when Nine asked him to appear on The Footy Show with Sam Newman, Gary said he would rather drop dead.
Maybe they should rename this the charlie sheen medal.
“Whatchoo talking about David?”
LOL
It might be in bad taste now he’s gone… so business as usual at Nine.
Why did I know they couldn’t completely rename it (taking out Gary’s name)
out of respect?!!
Typical!!!
That’s why I don’t watch the show anymore!
Wouldnt surprise me, if they are saying this, just because he passed away .
Probably had no interest at all , in getting him to come down under.
Whatchoo talking about David?
