MasterChef’s master week

MasterChef Australia finally takes out the week's #1 after reaching a new season high and ruling the week. But it wasn't enough to stop another win by Nine.

MasterChef Australia has officially cemented its place as our favourite show taking out the #1 spot of the week with 1.88m viewers. Until now the spot has eluded it, mostly due to the effect of averaging 5 shows and competition from Underbelly and events.

It reached a new season high and was the top show of the night from Sunday to Thursday (TEN still separates the Sunday and Friday editions from the rest). But while it lifted TEN’s shares, it wasn’t enough to stop Nine from taking out Week 23.

The Nine Network won the week with 28.6% over Seven’s 26.9% and TEN’s 23.6%. The ABC had 15.6% and SBS 5.3%.

In primary channels Nine was 25.2%, Seven 23.6%, TEN 22.1%, ABC1 13.7%, SBS ONE 4.9%.

In digital channels GO! was 3.4%, 7TWO 3.3%, ONE 1.5%, ABC2 1.4%, ABC3 0.5% and SBS TWO 0.4%.

The Nine Network took out demos 18-49 and 25-54 but TEN won 16-39.*

No change in cities as Nine was again first in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and Seven continuing to own Adelaide and Perth.

Nine won Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Saturday with Seven taking Tuesday and Friday. TEN won Wednesday. ABC pipped TEN on Saturday.

  1. it will definately be an interesting 2nd half. shows like R:SO, Rush and City Homicide are hardly ratings winners all seeing numbers below 900k. i’d say they only still in existance to fill the networks drama quotas. and i’d be dammed if Cops LAC is a hit, it is a genre that isn’t working atm, the team behind is not very strong and they only started filming the other day so if they are going to air all episodes this year it will have a turnaround shorter than home&away and neighbours.

  2. @ Jerome Thanks for this. Ten may fasttrack Offspring, and Rush is surely back soon? On top of Glee and Modern family they’re doing ok. The Masterchef numbers are amazing and they’re only going to get bigger. Nine will probably give us RSO soon and fasttrack CLAC. Not sure about how either of these will go – and Hey Hey has run out of steam everywhere except Melbourne. I will be watching Seven’s figures against these news shows with great interest – I’ve really got my doubts about the whole offering. There will be casualties!

  3. @Ronnie, on Guy’s behalf Packed to the Rafters, Dancing with the stars, World’s strictest parents, and more border security, Airways and My Kitchen Rules all rated above 1.5 last season, some well over. they also have X factor coming which already has a lot of hype. and lots of new other new shows.

9 also have the block, new top gear, and some new shows like AFP which are expected to do big numbers.

the question is ten, they haven’t planned ahead well, fasttracked way too many shows, new local stale is small, and don’t have many sucessful shows to return. Offsring could be a surprise hit but otherwise there is very little that have a high probability of doing 1.5+ numbers like other networks do.

  4. @ Guy – What “big guns” are you referring to? I keep wondering when Seven will join the 2010 ratings competition. Tim Worner has always been afraid of programming 830 Sunday – so now he just concedes. Underbelly 3 is seriously flawed – aggressively programming against it might have achieved something – particularly outside of Sydney. And allowing Sea Patrol to win 830 Thursday is just plain incompetence.

  5. @Darryn – nine does not own the rights to the French Open, its Foxsports, I have foxtel but they must have paid to air it on Nine, so cut your whinging and be grateful the important match was shown. Australia has a new national pasttime: whinging, and it because of clowns like . Glad it rated well for em, because not everyone has foxtel

  6. For me growing up on Hey Hey it’s close to the best thing on tv right now. One of the funniest bits recently was an act on red faces said something about them being about nostalgia & daryls response was “well you came to the right place” 🙂 Once it doesn’t have MC as competition it’ll get 1.2m + regularly.

  7. @blah blah, yeah sometme i do post similar things on mediaspy and TvTonight. i post under the same name, not trying to sabotage the tv forum world.

@John Jackson, pretty sure Ja’mie was talking from a ratings point of view which HeyHey is definately struggling especially given the huge budget. the impact it has on the tv landscape is up for pesonal opinion but imo is just 2hours of an uninnovated format that is taking the airtime that would otherwise go to potentially good, popular shows.

  8. Jerome do you just copy and paste your comments in every forum you look at? I swear I read the same comments from you every day atleast three times a day.

  9. No tennis tonight I see. And these pathetic free to air channels are crying over the anti-syphoning laws. bring it on I say, strip any channel that has the rights to sporting events and does not show it.

  10. Ten made advances with MC, NCIS, Modern Family and Glee, but still was not able to win a single demographic. That’s because of the network’s poor ratings on Fridays and Saturdays, and a digital channel named GO!. If Ten were to win at least a demo it will need MC to pull at least 2 million, and other programs to lift.

  11. @Ja’mie, Hey Hey is living up to it all for me. I think it is the most important show on TV at the moment apart from the news/current affair type shows. It is the only one doing live entertainment with guests overseas & local at night and that we need more of instead of reality and crime related shows everywhere. For that I massively am thankful for 9 at bringing it back, as Rove has gone and the likes of Micallef/Hamish & Andy aren’t fronting anything similar at the moment. I’d prefer it on Saturdays, but if 9 wants it on Wednesdays or where-ever else I’ll support that decision.. just as long as it is there, and providing the genre that it is, whilst no-one else can offer anything similar. Also comparing the closest thing to it in recent times.. the ratings are still better than Rove got most times, but every show is taking hits up against Masterchef anyway.

Although why did it and 7PM have ratings that were at least a million earlier in the week, yet in this report Hey Hey is just a notch under it and 7PM a bit lower?

Speaking of Masterchef though it really is strange. I wish I really did like it so I could get into it all but I just don’t. Just can’t see the fascination (was never a fan of Ready Steady Cook either, but the times I did watch it I preferred that to this – at least the ones that would have celebs), and it saddens me more as 10 used to be my fave channel, but not at the moment with Masterchef everywhere. I used to love Big Brother though, and people used to complain about all the reality TV and how it is horrible, and how it fills so much programming and they’d wish it to go away and funnily enough that is how I’m feeling about Masterchef now. Oh well, it ends in July I think so until then all the other programs on channels apart from 10.. just hold on, any ratings you get until then is good considering it seems so many with ratings boxes want to watch MasterChef.

    1. John: Overnight ratings are preliminary. These are more accurate. But it will go up again once timeshifting figures come in. Welcome to the new world of ratings 2010.

A reminder to all to keep comments succinct. Ta.

  12. ten would be happy finally winning a demographic, sure does take them a lot of effort though, with mulitchannels, early evenings, and saturdays bringing them down.

a strong week for 7news, one of its biggest gaps between 9 for a few months. it is good on their behalf that despite 7’s primetime not doing too well 7news/TT remain pretty much unaffected.

  13. Hey Hey It’s Saturday 999,000

Ouch. Hey Hey really hasn’t lived up to all the hype of the Reunions. The dated and tiered format is well and truly on the way out.

  14. @Ninerules
As for Seven V Nine, Nine have 8, Seven have 4. That is excluding the 2 weeks of the Winter Olympic Games and the 2 over Easter. So really IMO when Seven roll out their big guns in the next few weeks its still anyones for the taking.
