The New South Wales government has announced a $25 million funding boost for film and TV production.
Premier Keneally today made the announcement at Fox Studios today.
The additional funding, to be delivered in the upcoming NSW Budget, includes:
• An additional $20 million in screen incentives to attract large-scale production to NSW; and
• $5 million for Screen NSW’s Production Investment Fund to support local productions.
Keneally said: “This is an unprecedented commitment by an Australian State to secure large-scale, continuous film and TV production.”
“We want to cement NSW as the nation’s premier location for screen production.
“This $25 million will support local jobs, it will support investment in the NSW economy, and it sends a clear message that, here in NSW, we are serious about staying number one.”
In Screen Australia’s last National Drama Production Survey 63% of production took place in NSW in 2008/2009, dominated by the films Guardians of Ga’Hoole and Happy Feet 2. In 2007 / 2008 Victoria pipped NSW with $250m in production, over NSW’s $239m due largely to The Pacific.

Film Victoria has had a significant budget cut this financial year, while NSW is back in the business of attracting production to its state. About half of the Victorian based drama productions mentioned are “runaway” productions, and they have been attracted to Victoria by significant incentives. All I’m saying is that Victoria will now have to compete with a more assertive and better funded NSW. I’m sure John Edwards would rather stay at home to make all his shows and now he will have the support to do so.
It’s too bad no one will be able to get to the new jobs on time because the roads are stuffed and the public transport even worse… Come on March 2011..!!
Hope they make some science fiction programs I getting sick of all the history stories that come out of Australian tv
I don’t see what this story has to do with Victoria, The NSW government is only trying to make more production jobs which is very important. and theres lots of projects in production such as:
Home and Away, Packed to the Rafters, Rescue, Cops LAC, Rake, Spirited, Underbelly, Dance Academy, Me and My Monsters, My Place, Like a Virgin, East West 101, The Jesters, Panic at Rock Island, I Rock
plus and endless list of films, the investment is very important for Australia in general
I dont agree Ronnie. It feels like Melbourne is by far surpassing NSW as far as production goes.
This year alone Victoria has had Tangle, Rush,City Homicide, The Librarians, Bed Of Roses,Offspring, Killing Time, Neighbours, New Channel Drama Pilot, The Cup, Killer Elite, Eye Of The Storm all filmed in victoria…..
NSW only has Rescue, Home And Away, Cops Lac, Packed To Rafters,Dance Academy
Seems to me Vic is by far the superior state in terms of production!
…and those are just the drama prdns. Victoria has struggled far worse than it’s current state of play.
This would have to be the first thing Krazy Kris has done to make NSW the nation’s premier location. The immediate standing down of her government would be more help though!
Ronnie, Victoria is not a struggling industry, it’s currently experiencing somewhat of a boom. NSW is getting the money because everything is being made in Victoria and there’s very little being shot in NSW..
once again sydney thinks it is the capital of australia!
Wow don’t know where they got the money from for this!? Maybe from the axed train lines that they promised??
This announcement is a complete disaster for an already struggling Victorian production industry.
