Patrick Stewart knighted

Patrick Stewart was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday for his 50 year career.

Actor Patrick Stewart, 69, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

The Star Trek actor was recognised for his 50-year career in movies, TV and the theatre, including 16 years with the Royal Shakespeare Company, which he joined in his 20s.

He said of the knighthood: “It was an unlooked-for honour but as I grew up as a child, falling in love with the theatre and Shakespeare, my heroes were Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Alec Guinness.

“The knights of the theatre represented to me not only the pinnacle of the profession but the esteem in which the profession was held. And now to find myself, to my astonishment, in that company is the grandest thing that has professionally happened to me.”

Bravo.

The Queen is reported to be a fan of Stewart’s work.

  1. I thought he was knighted years ago. Long overdue, very well deserved.

I still think of the brilliance of having both he and McKellen in Godot when both had a similar relationship in X-Men.

  2. He was one of King Arthur’s Knights as well, in Excalibur and also Augustus Caesar’s right hand man in I Claudius. Congrats Patrick Stewart well deserved.

  3. “The Queen is reported to be a fan of Stewart’s work.”

Yes, Her Majesty is reported to have said “I thought the X-Men movies were marvellous. Well, the first two anyway. I fell asleep during the third and
the last one stank worse than my corgis.”

  4. If on the off-chance Patrick reads this website, congratulations sir!!

I’m delighted for him. He’s such a solid actor, yet (apart from trek and x-men) he has been largely off the mainstream.

This might be reaching a bit – but does anyone remember an advertisement for (if i remember correctly) ANZ bank from 2 maybe 3 years ago where the voice-over was amazingly like a certain Mr Patrick Stewart. My wife even agreed. Does that ring any bells for anyone?

  5. This is the best news I’ve heard all week. What a remarkably talented actor, and a real gentleman as well. Brilliant. And yes, that is one amazing voice.

  6. Fabulous. I love Patrick Stewart. His voice is to die for and obviously not a snob if took the part in a star trek tv series. Not many “serious” actors can attest to that.
