Jessica McNamee, who plays 'Sammy Rafter' on Packed to the Rafters, has quit the show.

Jessica McNamee, who plays ‘Sammy Rafter’ on Packed to the Rafters, has quit the show.

As an original cast member, she becomes the first “family” principal to exit the drama.

“Her final episode goes to air next month,” a network spokeswoman said.

“We are all sad to see her go but she is moving on to new projects.”

Current storylines have seen her character separate from ‘Nathan Rafter’ (Angus McLaren) and refusing to reconcile.

Media today report that she plans to return to university to finish a deferred arts degree, but has also yearned for diverse roles and to work overseas.

McNamee was also one of the show’s regulars to try her hand at Dancing with the Stars. She also appeared in Home and Away and on horror comedy film The Loved Ones.

  1. Is it possible David when characters leave shows in future you can not put up a picture of the person on the page.I’m one of those people who don’t want to know who is leaving etc.I like to watch a show with that surprise element Cheers……..P.S I don’t agree with your comment either lol

    1. Craig: Alas no it isn’t possible. This is a site for TV news. Not TV hints. The news landscape triggers subsequent stories too, so you would want me to not write those, or do so in some protective manner. And still maintain a news blog? Impractical. Remember I am also competing with other forums and Twitter that freely discuss such info.

      Now you know moving forward that casting news for actors is not considered a Spoiler. That may also include a description of the character they may play sometimes.

  3. this is sad, she has a great character. but if any of the cast were going to leave Sammy would probably the easiest to write out. there are a lot of aussie soapies that move overseas and i instantly think mistake. but i think jess in in with a better chance. if the hemsworths can do it hopefully she can.

  5. That’s sad. I liked Sammy! And Jessica is a wonderful actress. Loved her on H&A and then on PTTR. All the best with her studies and whatever else she does next.

  7. When is Jessica Marais going to leave and work on a show that I want to watch?

    She was absolutely magnificent on “Legend of the Seeker” and it would be great to watch her in another project (preferably still wearing the red leather catsuit, but that’s not a strict requirement for future TV or movie appearances).

  9. If you had said to me that a Jessica was leaving Rafters I would have tipped Jessica Marais, not Jessica MacNamee. Hollywood beckons for Marais, not sure about MacNamee’s prospects. She has her moments in the show, but in my humble opinion, Jessica Marais will be a big big star ala Radha Mitchell, Rose Byrne in the not too distant future. As a loyal fan of Rafters, i think ‘Sammy’s’ departure will open up better storylines for the increasingly likeable and developing character that is ‘Nathan Rafter’. Angus McClaren is shaping up into a really fine actor. Take note Logie voters.

  12. Shouldn’t this have a spoiler tag (or at least photo and name be in the story only), since it will determine the outcome of a current storyline on the show?

    1. Bogues: You are reading a site with TV News. Actors joining or leaving a show is TV News. How a character exits is a storyline Spoiler. All I have reported is the current state of play. Whether she sails off into the sunset with another man / woman / or gets blown to bits by a crazed bomber would be a Spoiler.

  14. I like her but when are actors going to realise the search for “diversive” roles on Australian television usually ends up in the end of their career. There just isn’t enough ‘diversity’ to go around on our screens.

    Unless you’ve got what it takes to make it overseas stick to what you’re doing; especially if you’re on a hit show like rafters which is rare to come across.

    I hope she does well whatever she does.
