MasterChef steams up the ratings week

The elimination of Marion Grasby from MasterChef Australia dominated the week in television, but it was Nine that took out the weekly title.

The elimination of Marion Grasby from MasterChef Australia dominated the week in television -a week that included the State of Origin.

It attracted the most buzz and was the single biggest audience of the week -a cool 2.14m viewers. It rewarded TEN with “money can’t buy” attention while online forums are rife with debate about whether she should have been eliminated or not. For the first time this year the show ‘s average (Mon-Thurs) saw it top the week with 2.05m viewers.

However, the week was won by the Nine Network with 27.6% over Seven’s 25.8% and TEN’s 23.6%. The ABC had 17.2% and SBS 5.9%.

In primary channels Nine was 23.8%, TEN 22.4%, Seven 22.1%, ABC1 15.1%, SBS ONE 5.4%.

In digital channels GO! was 3.8%, 7TWO 3.7%, ABC2 1.5%, ONE 1.3%, ABC3 0.6%, SBS TWO 0.5%.

In key demos the TEN Network won 16-39, while Nine enjoyed 18-49 and 25-54.

Nine took out Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Seven was first on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. TEN was first on Thursday. The ABC was second on Saturday.

Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane fell to Nine while Seven once again reigned in Adelaide and Perth.

ASTRA Week 28

Week 28

  1. Correct me if I am wrong, but I understand tonight (JUly 22) is the final of Fox 8’s Football Superstar. If that is the case, it is advertised as Thursdays at 7.30pm, the results are already on the website and the show is only halfway through … surely this is very very wrong

  2. Craig, ASTRA figures actually differ from the Pay TV ratings here. The latter is 5 city metro average, the former is “reach” for national incl. regionals. I offer both and readers can make of them what they will.

  3. Like the Astra ratings graph David.Certainly a very fair results table compared to that other one,and you would have to say even more acurate

  4. Ten has Masterchef but still can’t win a week. They are a one trick pony, albeit a very skilled pony. Without Masterchef they are nothing and they know it.

  5. @ Ronnie

it’s cheaper and easier to buy material and follow the lead of the US than risk your own ventures in Australia. For every MC there are probably 5 failures or average performers. That’s why shareholders and boards make those decisions, nothingto do with quality (the right way) just pure economics for now. it would be refreshing though for SBS and ABC to do more local content since I’m up to my back teeth with UK content across 2 of their 3 channels.

  6. Masterchef really is a game-changer – it’s essentially a 3 way tie for primary channel support, but Ten have the best demos by far. I don’t really understand why Boards and Shareholders allow 7 and 9 to remain so misogynistic and old-fashioned – it’s all poor business strategy and practice at every level. Why don’t they take a few hints from David Mott?

As commercial television has given up on Saturday night the ABC audience skyrockets – particularly for drama, but I’ve heard a rumour the ABC cannot find a Head of Fiction – what’s going on out there? Doc Martin delivers 1.5 (!), BOR delivers barely 500,000. The Bill has been axed so what about some great new Aussie drama (this does not mean you BOR) on the ABC on Saturday when the audience is clearly hungry for it?
