Nine slapped for poor captioning

Channel Nine has been slapped by ACMA for failing to provide adequate captioning during episodes of Nine News and RPA.

Channel Nine has been slapped by Australian Communications and Media Authority for failing to provide adequate captioning during episodes of Nine News and RPA.

ACMA requires captioning of prime time programing for hearing impaired viewers but ruled that TCN had provided partial or inadequate captions between July 21 and July 29 last year.

It also investigated complaints about Two and a Half Men, Getaway, 60 Minutes, and Cold Case.

TCN  has agreed to measures including enhanced quality control and supervision, targeted ‘spot’ audits and reporting to  ACMA. It will also organise regular meetings with its caption provider and upgrade its captioning transmission monitoring.

As a result of the findings ACMA will now run a captioning workshop with ‘all relevant stakeholders’.

The watchdog says it TCN will be “closely monitored” over the issue.

  1. @ james… Seeing GO! is a multi digital channel, they are not required to have their shows captioned. Infact…. all multi channels are not required to captioned their programs under current laws. Captions work great on my TV when iam watching GO!… maybe u have a faulty tv???

@ neon kittin….. I think your comment is totally unfair! all networks havve poor programming, I dont understand how u can say this about nine, unless u really dislike Nine??? All networks will never please everyone one…. they al have their goood days and bad ones!
Honestly…seven wont win the ratings this year! Nine will win it…. but just!!

  2. at least it’s a start.

Still more needs to be done. Ch 9 is actually the worst offender of the big 3.

Channel 4 in UK recently announces it will have 100% captioning in all its stations,.

I’d liketo see that happening here. And soon.

  3. as of next year all programmes need to be captioned regardless of tx time so I’m sure networks are working on getting this done. Running a ‘Captioning Workshop’ is a bit of a joke.

  4. Their captioning is horrible. They have Nine on one of the TVs at my gym with captions on. They often freeze for well over an hour. They day before the Logies the Saturday Kerri Anne was on, and at the end she said to watch the Logies the following night. That comment was stuck on screen for the remaining hour I was at the gym.
