SKY News: Election coverage

SKY News is talking up its election coverage with a string of shows covering the political sphere.

Buoyed by David Speers as the Great Debate moderator, SKY News is talking up its election coverage, just as ABC News 24 launches.

It hasturned its A-PAC channel into an around the clock ‘Election Channel.’ However a quick look at the channel doesn’t indicate when replay content was recorded. If viewers are watching a politician speak, it’s integral to know whether it is live or when it was filmed.

SKY News’ lineup of specialist political journalists includes the Federal Press Gallery team headed by Political Editor David Speers, with Kieran Gilbert, Ashleigh Gillon and David Lipson, together with the highly-respected Helen Dalley, and Sky News contributor Peter Van Onselen.

David Speers was unanimously chosen by the major political parties, Labor and the Coalition, and the National Press Club, to host the leaders’ debate at the National Press Club in Canberra on Sunday.

Ashleigh Gillon and David Lipson are currently on the campaign trail, travelling around Australia with Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

The Election 2010 team is supported by News’ network of bureaus in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, with journalists reporting on the ground as the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader campaign around the country.

SKY News Multiview – with eight simultaneous split-screens of video and text choices, is providing unparalleled coverage of the election at the touch of a button on the Foxtel remote. In another Australian TV first, viewers can choose channels dedicated solely to each of the major parties with The Labor Channel and The Coalition Channel.

The unrivalled SKY News coverage includes ‘The Election Channel’ (Channel 648 and free online at www.a-pac.tv) which broadcasts news conferences, election programs and major election events, and SKY NEWS BUSINESS (Channel 602) which focuses on the campaign from the perspective of business and finance – with news, commentary and analysis of policy announcements and their potential impact on both businesses and individuals.

Daily Election 2010 Agenda programs look at where the leaders are campaigning and provide analysis and commentary on the issues that have caught the attention of politicians, the media and the public with insight from Australia’s most respected campaign watchers.

The Contrarians with Peter Van Onselen on Fridays at 4.30pm features a panel debate about the week on the campaign trail and will be a robust, no-holds-barred take on politics, where fence sitting is strictly forbidden.

Paul Murray Live Election 2010 (Monday to Friday at 9.15pm) is an alternative look at the campaign day, with Murray and his team guaranteeing to expose the quirky and humorous side of the day’s news.

  1. I have been watching the Elections on Sky News 601 on Austar. Unfortunately I don’t seem to be able to get all the picture and wording across the Screen even though I have a 106cm Panasonic Plasma TV I have tried it on 16/9 14/9 4/3 and all the Zoom aspects but still miss out on letters or words. Can you tell me what the Website is for the Elections for all the Seats so that I can follow it on my computer as well as on the TV. We are in Joanna Gash’s Electorate of Gilmore in NSW. My husband and I really enjoy your news telecast. Thanking you. Yours faithfully Patricia Stoddart.

  2. That’s all very well. They say about 30% of households in Aust have paytv. Out of that how many actually watch Sky News. Maybe they should become a free to air channel then they can boast about their services.
