UK contest winner joins Neighbours

Gabriella Darlington has won the UK Neighbours "Be A Star" contest and begins filming on the TEN soap today.

Gabriella Darlington, 18, from Chelmsford, north-east of London, won the UK Neighbours “Be A Star” contest and begins filming on the TEN soap today.

Darlington beat off competition from more than 1,600 hopefuls and wins a four week guest role.

She will guest star as Poppy Rogers, described as a “free-spirited” backpacker who makes an impression on the local bachelors.

“I can’t believe how lucky I am. I never expected to be shortlisted, let alone get to Australia and win,” she said.

The show has previously held similar talent searches within Australia.

The soap, which is struggling in ratings at the moment, will mark its 6000th episode soon with a media party.

  1. @ Mr. Chandler: Blair McDonough was *okay*; at least he went on to act in other projects post-Neighbours. It was Aussie Idol reject Dan O Connor who was repulsively bad.

Really, Neighbours hasn’t been concerning itself with its creative quality/integrity in years. In its current state, its merely anentity that exists to fulfill a purpose or two in the name of business (e.g. international revenue, local content quota points etc.).

Neighbours is a disgrace and will continue to be in the years to come unless somebody with even an ounce’s worth of inspiration comes in and completely revamps the show. F*** graduality. This ugly duckling needs to be either euthanised or metamorphosed… stat.

  2. With Lolly, she had some really difficult scenes for a young actress to begin with, but she did come good in the end. By that time it was too late as they had already written her out. With Ringo, he’s likable enough, but I just have never gotten a sence of star power with him, as there is with the likes of Donna, and Andrew for example.

  3. Ringo from the Dolly contest was good but Lolly was one of the worst actresses on the show ever. The Big Brother contestant wasn’t such a bad actor but the bloke from Australian Idol was an absolute shocker. These stunts are what have wrecked the show.

  4. This is one of neighbours major problems, and i agree with Shazza it really lowers the shows already low credibility.

@redbullyboy i don’t think it will raise ratings in the uk, they had the same contest here when ringo went into the show. Don’t think rating went up at all. Who would really care that a no one who won a contest is in neighbours, much better off actually getting some credible talented actors. But maybe they can’t afford it and would rather have a nobody they don’t have to pay very well.

  5. Shazza – Neighbours holding this contest in the UK was seen as a way to thank UK audiences for their support of the show and to boost UK ratings.
