60 Minutes: Latham at Large

The former Labor leader fronted up to the Opposition leader at Penrith RSL club, before someone told him to "P**s off!"

60 Minutes ring-in Mark Latham has now fronted up to Tony Abbott on the campaign trail.

The former Labor leader questioned the Opposition leader at Penrith RSL club for a Coalition campaign announcement in front of about 40 veterans.

‘‘I’ve interviewed Pauline Hanson and we’d like to know, are you willing to apologise for your role in putting her in a prison,’’ Mr Latham said.

‘‘I don’t think that’s a fair assessment of my role,’’ Mr Abbott responded.

Latham went on to ask the Liberal leader about his immigration policy.

‘‘I was encouraged at the start of the campaign when you and your spokesperson Scott Morrison said you would be slashing the migration program.

‘‘But then it’s turned out you’ve just got the same target as the Gillard government.’’

Latham’s presence clearly upset some of the veterans with one yelling: “Piss off, Latham, this isn’t about you!”

You can see some of the exchange here.

Meanwhile Nine has advised the following for its episode this Sunday night:

Latham at Large
If you asked us to describe the current election campaign, the word that immediately springs to mind is – “boring”. The race to the Lodge has been a cheerless trudge. And the so called “Great” Debate was about as stimulating as warm milk before bedtime. Someone needed to shake things up. Well, our guest reporter,

Mark Latham, certainly managed to do that. But before you write him off as a bully and an attention seeker, remember, Mr Latham has experienced an election campaign from the frontline. He knows the inner machinations. Maybe that’s why the major parties are so scared of him.

A Real Fighter
Every time an Australian soldier is killed or injured in Afghanistan, we ask ourselves whether it’s worth it. Should we be sacrificing our best and bravest for a war on the other side of the world that seems to have no end and that very few people even understand? Ray Martin has just spent time with a courageous young man,

a commando from our special forces, who makes a powerful argument for our troops to stay put. And Private Damien Thomlinson is more entitled to an opinion than most. He lost both his legs in Afghanistan when a Talaban bomb hit his vehicle. Yet, despite all he’s been through, he can’t wait to get back there.

Mum’s the Word
To the world she’s known simply as Octomum and, if you’ve heard of her, it was probably all bad.

Nadya Suleman is the single mother who made international headlines with the birth of eight babies through IVF last year. Problem was, she already had six children and the only way she’s been able to support her extraordinary brood is to repeatedly sell her story in a love-hate courtship with the media. The result: she’s been called everything from completely mad to a money-grabbing monster. So, Liz Hayes was surprised when she finally got to meet Nadya. Eccentric? Certainly. A loving mum? Definitely. The rest of it – well, you be the judge.

It airs 7:30pm Sunday on Nine.

  1. Right – thats enough! This is the last straw for me! After a series of at best questionable decisions Channel Nine has managed to drag themselves even lower with Latham. Not only will I not watch 60 minutes (not that I do, it’s a waste of my time and electrons) I will not watch channel nine until they manage to find some ethics and/or standards. I’ve already changed my programming so it doesn’t come up anymore.

  2. Latham and Nine News fit like a hand in a glove. Both as grotty as each other. “Live from Melbourne” (actually Richmond, and the GTV9 rooftop), “First on Nine”, despite others having aired the same earlier, fake “live” reports done from the car park. And I still ask – Is Latham a paid-up member of the AJA?

  3. Unfortunately I reckon they’ll get mega ratings out of this. It isn’t quality TV, and Latham is boorish and oh-so-last-decade but it’s a perfect fit for Ch9 ‘The Bogan Channel’.

  4. I would rather watch the delightful Modern Family at 6.30 and watch it again and again, 4 times, than sit through a nano second of Latham on 60 minutes. Not sure who is worse, him or the program that is supporting his stupidity – or as the Fast Forward gals used to depict – “Rampant Stupidity”!

  5. Get real folks – you can’t buy this sort of publicity. 60 mins is going to kill ’em all on Sunday. People love to hate a tool.
Pity, cos it’ll only encourage the media barons to hire other ‘shock jocks’.
Real, impartial, professional journalism has ben dead for decades.

  6. I just loved the Nine morning news today. They were saying how horrible Latham is and how disgusting his behaviour is, followed by a plug to watch 60 Minutes on Sunday night. Nine know they have a potential ratings gold and are manufacturing their reporters to disown him so that more people will want to watch 60 Minutes on Sunday night….

That being said, Latham’s journalistic tactics are more in tune with A Current Affairs asking a dodgy builder about their work than the standard that should be set with 60 Minutes!!!

  7. I think that mark should be just aloud to do this and move on. If people want to watch it they can if they want to ignore it well they can just do that to. Despite Marks odd behaviour and polirsing opinions he sometimes has a point. I think that point will hopefully come across in this story for 60 minutes. Anyway lets blame SKY News for bringing him back into the spot light in the first place.

  8. Should be amusing to watch Latham’s effort on Sunday – be interesting to see who he managed to interview.

Though I doubt a long career in journalism beckons in any case…….

  9. Actions speak louder than words. If NIne was really sorry about Mark Latham’s disgraceful behaviour this segment would not be proceeding. It’s a failure of editorial judgement at every level within the network. After Mark Latham has been used in this way he will find himself spat out and ignored by Nine, leaving him even more bitter and twisted. Everyone loses – in particular whatever was left of the 60 minutes brand.
