ABC wins Election Night, but Seven takes the week

ABC wins Saturday's Election Night tussle and takes third place for the week, as Seven wins Week 34.

More viewers turned to the ABC for Saturday’s election coverage than  commercial offerings.

ABC1 won the five-way primary share tussle with a 27.0% share ahead of Nine’s 20.3% and Seven’s 16.9%. With its AFL commitments TEN slumped to a lowly 10.5% while SBS ONE’s belated coverage was just 3.3%. ABC News 24 was only 1.%.

Alternative viewing for Saturday saw 7TWO rise to 8.1% and GO! 6.9%.

  1. David are they austar ratings or Foxtel,my guess there austar?Whatever they are thanks for posting them…….I thought Channel 9 coverage was the best with the election, entertaining when they were having a go at each other.Perhaps when there is a debate next time between both leaders this would be a more entertaining way to go.I found the ABC were using graphics they used last time not exactly new

  2. Low point of the night – David Koch talking to Wyatt Roy, and bursting with a sense of hilarity as he excitedly told him he was more popular on Twitter than Justin Bieber!!!! Nothing about policy, nothing about his plans, nothing about the milestone of being the youngest PM – just Koch dumbing down everything he goes near. I learnt my lesson, switched back to the ABC and did not leave the safety – and sanity – of it for the rest of the night.

I flicked between 9 and ABC and a bit of Sky News but I was mainly watching Wedding Crashers on Go!

I agree Vicky, the shouting and arguing between the political consultants on Nine got out of hand as the night went on, Lisa and Carl seemed to be consultanly trying to break-up the agruing. Anyway I was turned off almost straight away when Peter Costello started the smirk he always has.

  4. ABC’s coverage was excellent. The only one to watch with good graphics and presentation. A highly credible production.
Channel 9’s coverage was a joke and unwatchable. Lisa what’s her name was way out of her depth, a ridiculously large panel and with those ducks, stupid presentation. All on a night that was history in the making.

  5. Overall I was impressed with both Nine and ABC. 7 looked like a very cheap version, Nine’s was very grand but authoritative and they had reporters all over the location.

I for one actually liked the “shooting ducks” to give a summary of the results, but I think 2007’s “shredder” is better and quicker. Nine’s and ABC’s graphics were easy to understand. It looks like Nine invested a lot into it, and not just money & set, but also with their new technology and with their reporters. Good to see Ellen Fanning for Nine in Bennelong and Mistopoulos in Hasluck.

Surprisingly, some of Antony Green’s predictions were wrong, I think he expected an ALP win (certainly according to his website’s seat-by-seat profile). Clearly the ABC won for their clarity. Nine was the leader out of the commerciaislf or being the most expansive. I for one enjoyed the panel and the discussion. Laughed when Wayne Swan almost lost his seat.

Sky’s graphics and super on the bottom were very complexed to understand. Dislike.

By the way, Costello, Kroger, Roxon and Oakes were fantastic. Arbib, Joyce and the biographer were unbearable at times! Also, in 2007, there was amazing bias for ALP and Rudd. Oakes & 9 especially. This time we saw a swing in bias for Abbott, but no where near as much as what Rudd was lucky to have in 2007.

  6. I found the ABC coverage dull, disturbingly so,

I also watched Sky and Nine, David Speers looked exhausted especially towards the end of the election broadcast, not that I can blame him, they have certainly kept him busy, they were also having problems with their graphical software

I loved every moment of Nine’s coverage, the hosts, who I always enjoy and the panel, especially as always Michael Kroeger, Laurie Oakes was authoritative, I only wish that they had been able to retain Graeme Richardson, and they didn’t have that ridiculous and rude biographer woman, the less we see of her the better

  7. I had an election get together with friends and we watched the ABC. We briefly switched over to 9, just in time to catch some idiotic graphics (ducks being shot down in a shooting gallery… wtf??!) and after 20 seconds we switched back.

Thanks ABC. You’re still the only one to watch when it comes to “serious” TV.

  8. Channel Nine’s Election coverage was truly awful and further enhanced the problems with Australian politics. Just filthy politicians screaming at each other. It was also completly obvious that Nine’s bias went to the Coalition.

  9. @Tom – “Anyone else notice Melissa Doyle looked like she’d forgotten to put a top on under her jacket… Very strange!”

Yes Tom, I did. Her top was skin colour which made her look like she wasn’t wearing one. Amusing to say the least.
