Celebrity Amazing Race?

Phil Keoghan reckons a Celebrity version of The Amazing Race would never work.

Sarah Jessica Parker would be mad for it.

Drew Barrymore would probably be up for it and Neil Patrick Harris would surely be a starter.

But Phil Keoghan says a Celebrity version of The Amazing Race would never work.

“The question that always comes up is would we be able to get them out of their schedule,” explains Keoghan.

“They say they want to do it, but the reality is would their schedule allow for it, and would they really be able to put up with the schedule itself. It’s very different than anything else that’s shot, like a movie set. We sort of have to adhere to the rules of the world as opposed to creating our own rules on a set or in a studio. We are beholden to what happens in the real world. That makes it really tough.”

Aside from which global citizens like celebrities would never behave as badly as American tourists in foreign territories. And what about those pre-existing relationships that give the teams such diversity? Both of those aspects were left on the floor when they did that stupid season of families criss-crossing America.

Season 17 of The Amazing Race kicks off in the US on Sepember 26th (fastrack, fastrack, fastrack….?). Meanwhile Seven is auditioning for the local Aussie version. We’ll soon find out if we are any more polite when we go abroad.

  1. The closest ‘The Amazing Race’ will get to a celebrity versions are the ‘All Stars’ edition!! but that said, the all stars series was one of the best!! (same with the family edition) haha.. 🙂

  2. Celebrity versions of reality shows never work as well as their normal counterparts. Look at Big Brother, Masterchef and The Apprentice.

The reason people tune in to reality shows is that it gives them a chance to connect with people who may or may not be similar to themselves. We already get enough celebrity news in other formats.

  3. No it wouldnt work because the paparazzi would be a huge hindrance. The stars listed are A-Listers. That is what they would be aiming for so thats why it wouldnt work imo.

  4. Phil is right. It would never work.

But not because of celeb scheduling. Because it would, like all celeb-stacked reality and game shows without exception, be complete utter paint-drying-dull rubbish.

  5. Sounds great at first, but unless they had good makeup each morning they would be spotted and sometimes unable to get through onlookers to complete tasks etc.
