Drama on asbestos fight in development

FremantleMedia Australia is developing a new drama series around the James Hardie asbestos saga.

The saga of the building materials company saw it at the centre of a landmakrk with campaigner Bernie Banton (pictured) becoming the public face of the David v Goliath battle. He died in 2007.

An ABC spokeswoman said the project was “in development at this stage and is yet to be commissioned”.

Meanwhile, FremantleMedia’s other new drama series, TV1’s Killing Time which has been pushed back to 2011 due to legal process, has also been approved to a second season.

  1. Sounds like a great idea for what could be a really powerful series. And if you’re going to tell the story, you’d have to head right back to CSR’s mining of asbestos, the town of Wittenoom, etcetera – back to the 1920s and 30s. The fact that CSR hid asbestos’s lethality for decades, then spent millions trying to stymie legal action, is one of Australia’s most shameful big business stories. Needs to be told!

  2. i don’t see it as exploitation, rather a tribute to a true hero who fought a brave battle for the ‘little people’ and also a positive as far as raising awareness
