The Stig revealed (again)

Spoiler: Do you really want to know who he is? Well do, ya?

SPOILER: The identity of The Stig is in the news again after the Sunday Times (UK) claims the mystery may have been solved by information in a set of company accounts.

The helmeted Top Gear idetity is said to be former racing driver Ben Collins.

Collins, 35, is a former Formula Three driver who lives in Bristol and is known to possess one of the trademark white racing suits.

His company, Collins Autosport, made significantly more money after taking on work to provide “driving services provided for the BBC, mainly in the Top Gear programme” in December 2003, the Sunday Times reported.

That increased revenue came just a month after the first appearance of The Stig in a white suit, who had previously been dressed in black.

Collins Autosport said the business had a “cornerstone year”, the newspaper said, adding that the directors noted the work offered “good long-term prospects for continuing income”.

The Stig has recently been in dispute with the BBC over his attempts to write an autobiography, unhappy that the BBC is making money from his “brand” in merchandise but he is not received a share.

He has previously been noted to be more than one single person.

  1. Is it 2003 again or are they just rehashing old news? Any true fan of Top Gear has known this for years. But does it matter, No! Wonder if the BBC will kill off White Stig like they did black stig after Perry McCarthy outed himself as the original.

  2. I’m still none the wiser as to who that is anyway. And I have to agree with Regan, The Stig is just a character like Darth Vader and Boba Fett. Who really cares who it is, it’s just cool that he is mysterious…

  3. This has been known for a few years now. Use Google and find videos that compare Ben Collins’ voice with early interviews done with The Stig before they decided to shut him up.

  4. As Chris says, this has been reasonably well known for quite a while now.

I think one of the first confirmations of this was the accident report submitted after Hammond’s near-death crash a couple of years back.

  5. It’s been known for a long time that this guy is the main Stig. Then they use other drivers for reviews where the manufacturer or private owner wants their own driver to drive the car (the Renault F1 car being the most well known instance of this), or for challenges when Stig does something other than drive a conventional car.

  6. Not this again…

Why do we want to know for sure? It’s a heck of a lot more fun speculating about who this mysterious person in a white racing suit and helmet might be.

People who want to know for sure are just massive killjoys. Stop ruining it for the rest of us!!!!!
