The Vice Guide to Film

ABC’s iView is set to screen a cult documentary series The Vice Guide to Film, which will not be shown on ABC TV.

The series features Vice Magazine founder Shane Smith and filmmaker Eddy Moretti. Based in New York, the magazine is known for its controversial content and often strikes a sardonic and ironic pose on debauchery, sex, drugs, violence, crime, and social issues involving race and economic class.

The two explore film in wildly different countries, with the film scene giving insight into the wider social and cultural backdrop of the country.

Episodes include: the only ever look at Kim Jong‐il’s film studio in North Korea, the Marco Cinema funded by Mexico’s drug lords, the parallel cinema movement in Russia, filmmakers working against the odds in Palestine, and a visit to Tehran to explore burgeoning Iranian Film.

“We’re constantly increasing the level of iView exclusive content,” says ABC’s Internet Broadcast Program Manager Penny Wright.

“Our iView audience tends to skew younger than the traditional ABC TV audience, and they particularly love documentaries and programs such as Doctor Who, The IT Crowd and John Safran’s Race Relations, so we think The Vice Guide to Film is a great fit for iView.”

The Vice Guide to Film was created specifically for showcasing on the web, so it’s perfect as part of our move towards having content suited to iView’s younger, more tech‐savvy audience,” she says.

iView will also program the feature length Vice documentaries Heavy Metal in Baghdad and Australian-produced Heavy Metal Gangs of Wadeye in coming weeks.

It is available from Monday August 30.
