Former News presenter Eric Walters, best known as early morning anchor on the Today show, has died following a battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Former News presenter Eric Walters, who served at Nine, TEN and Seven, has died following a battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was 73.

Best known for his long-running stint as early morning anchor on the Today show and National Nine Early Morning News, he started in broadcasting at the age of 16, working in radio before joining TVW Perth in 1961.

Following a stint overseas he joined TEN’s Eyewitness News in the 1970s.

Walters joined the Nine Network in 1982 where he remained until 1990 when he returned to TEN to again present its 6:00pm newscast in Sydney.

He was the first presenter of TEN Evening News in 1990 until 1991, anchoring evening coverage of the War in the Gulf.

In 1992 he joined Seven as a reporter for its new current affairs program Real Life with Stan Grant.

More recently he appeared as a guest on the 25th Anniversary Edition of Today, which today paid tribute to him.

He is survived by wife Carol and three children.

  1. I have very fond memories of this man’s screen presence – a warm and real newsreader – not a robotic one. He showed his personality, and was most watchable.
