A hint of Torchwood: The New World

Here's a hint at what Starz has in store for the US adaptation of Torchwood.

Here’s a hint at what Starz has in store for the US adaptation of Torchwood, to be named Torchwood: The New World.

It includes the as-yet-uncast new character of Rex Matheson:

When C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy, he finds himself unearthing a threat which challenges the entire human race.

The answers seem to lie within an old, secret British institute, known only as Torchwood. But Torchwood was destroyed, years ago, and the keys to the institute are held by its only two survivors—former Police Officer Gwen Cooper, who has long since disappeared along with her husband and child, and the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, a man whose history seems to stretch back centuries.

With Rex under attack from all sides, in both the US and the UK, he soon discovers there are forces at work within every level of society, determined to stop Torchwood’s return. As a chain of events across the world links together the most disparate and unlikely individuals—including a surgeon, a killer, senators and CEOs—a new Torchwood team takes shape. But this time, the threat is much closer to home, as they realize that their greatest enemy is mankind itself …

  1. @Jon : There is only the one production, which is a joint BBC / STARZ version.

Russell Davies secured US funding due to the 2009 BBC budget cuts, which was the reason Children of Earth was only 5 eps.

Season 4 is said to continue on with Gwen & family moving to the US.

  2. Great that this sounds like a continuation – relaunch rather than remake! For SF especially, a remake just seems unnecessary – the likely US audience would have already seen the original. It’ll be interesting to see if UK and US each continue with their own versions, or if it ends up as an ongoing co-production.

  3. Ooooooooh!!! Horay for new Torchwood, it sounds good, I just hope it can deliver on the screen.

This is what Torchwood should have been about from the start, conspiracies and betrayals and beautiful locations.

Avengers with a hint of Bourne and Bond.

  4. Cool and groovy.

Sounds a little similar to Children of Earth with the whole “greatest enemy is mankind” schtick, but I’m hopeful that it will be just as enjoyable as most of the second season of Torchwood and the first 3 episodes of Children of Earth.
