Nine has finally announced a premiere date for The Real Hustle, the “con and scam” special hosted by Gyton Grantley.

It will premiere at 9pm Tuesday September 14th following Top Gear.

The special has been in the pipeline for some time, and is one of the few new locally-produced formats to be delivered by Nine in 2010. Originally promised for 2009, it was even given a free plug on New Year’s Eve when Clare “chk chk boom” Werbeloff appeared in the coverage of the Sydney Harbour fireworks.

The format is based on a BBC series of the same name, which was inspired by the success of the Hustle drama series.

Providing a revealing insight in to the mechanisms of real world hustling is this factual entertainment series.

Underbelly’s GYTON GRANTLEY presents THE REAL HUSTLE, a one-hour premiere special that exposes the scams and swindles anyone can fall for on Tuesday, September 14, at 9.00pm on Nine.

Using hidden cameras, a team of three Australian hustlers, along with their counterparts in the UK and USA, pull off some of the most notorious scams on unsuspecting members of the public. It could be you handing over your hard-earned money unless you learn the tricks of the ripoff merchants’ trade on The Real Hustle.

In Australia the scammers are: the infamous Clare Werbeloff, better known as the “chk-chk boom” girl who became an overnight sensation after conning the media with her “eyewitness” account of a Kings Cross shooting in 2009. “Honest con man” Nick Johnson, an expert swindler who knows every trick in the book. And Adam Mada, a sleight-of-hand expert, trained magician and master of manipulation.

In Tuesday’s premiere special the Aussie hustlers show just how easy it is for con artists to steal expensive jewellery – all it takes is a pair of handcuffs, some important-looking bits of paper and a whole lot of confidence.

You’ll also see the “White House Scam”, the police name for an unbelievably effective shoplifting technique that is sweeping the world. And have you ever received an unexpected free gift, a lunch or dinner, no strings attached? Be very wary, because you could return to a home stripped of all its contents.

All the people who’ve been scammed on The Real Hustle have been given their money back and have agreed that the footage can be used so that viewers can avoid being ripped off too.

Nine’s own website indicates the series is 30 minutes, but it will air for one hour.

  1. Surely this one trick pony actor has had his day in the spotlight.
Yes he was impressive in Underbelly but totally unimpressive in anything since.
Even in that commerical his range is limited.

  2. Is Gyton the only available actor in this country? It is ridiculous how narrow the casting is for all sorts of projects in this industry. He’s not even very good – in my opinion.

  3. Gyton Grantley looks thrilled to be hosting this rip-off of the UK version. I think he smells failure. I really like the UK version, but if they are just refilming the segments with Australian hustlers, then I’m not watching.

By the way, I think I should copyright and idea for a factual: Westfield Mall Cops: On the Beat.
