Dead Heat!

"It's going to be a draw!" cried Bruce McAvaney. But it's good news for TV networks and media buyers.

“It’s going to be a draw!” cried Bruce McAvaney.

“Unbelievable!”

And at 68 points each Collingwood and St. Kilda tied the 2010 AFL Grand Final. The match could have gone either way in the closing minutes, but the rule of no Extra Time put an end to that.

The tie may be bad news for teams and spectators, but it’s good news for TV networks and media buyers who will be racing to do it all over again and soak up the revenue and ratings from a repeat performance. It takes a lot to mount a broadcast of this scale, but for Seven it will net them twice the eyeballs.

Not since 1977 has the Grand Final been tied. But now with multichannels and the very expensive 3D experiment the ramifications are far more involved.

Amendments on this one will ricochet right across the week, particularly if it impacts on The Footy Show (which had already wrapped for the year) and Game Day Prime Time.

Then there are the brekkie shows which had planned to ramp up NRL coverage next week. Its Grand Final takes place Sunday week.

And all of this on the eve of the Commonwealth Games. It will be a three-way sports mega-weekend.

Spare a thought for Producers who will be crewing all over again, and juggling logistics one more time.

The event is one of the biggest audiences of the television year.

So big they had to do it twice.

  1. The Age sports journalist Samantha Lane, who is also part of the Before the Game panel, said on Mix FM Melbourne this morning that her colleague Andy Maher would not be able to host the show this Friday because he is flying to Delhi for Ten’s coverage of the Commonwealth Games. She added her father Tim Lane and Ten colleague Anthony Hudson are also flying to Delhi for the Games, and therefore are unable to call the GF re-match for 3AW and SEN respectively.

  2. All of the regular Fox Sports AFL shows are going to be back for another week, On the Couch, AFL Winners (These two were going to be on anyway), AFL Insiders, AFL 360, AFL Teams and Before the Bounce.

Now here is a curly question, if the AFL Footy Show on Nine is due to return again, between two Multi-Channels will Channel Nine feel the love to show it live to us up here in the Northern States? Probably not.

  3. As an outsider, this whole situation is quite funny actually. I’d hate to have paid top dollar for last week’s tickets though.

I can’t see Before The Game being on, Ten surely would have switched all of their sports focus to Delhi by now.

  4. David, will Seven delete all the shows between 11am and 6pm to make way for footy coverage, and will they be another episode of normal Game Day next Sunday morning?

  5. I’d like to make a comment about the picture quality on 7HD for the GF. It was terrible, all pixellated and definitely not HD quality. Did anyone else notice this? Is it normal for 7HD?

  6. @ Nathan, Even through Ch 7 and 10 rotate AFL Grand Finals, Seven will broadcast the replay beacause it’s still 2010. Ten don’t have the rights to broadcast the Grand Final again until 2011 (next year). I wonder if Fox Sports will show AFL Teams & Before the Bounce again? I hope so.
