Dexter producer defends Season 4

Warning: Make sure you have seen Season 4 before you read this one.

The death of Rita (Julie Benz) in Season Four of Dexter remains one of TV’s biggest shocks in the last 12 months (ok maybe Sarah Murdoch comes close).

Executive Producer John Goldwyn recently defended the move, despite it shocking so many fans of the show.

“I think that what we hope [season five] will prove is that it’s time to move Dexter into a new universe,” he told Zap2It. “That the theme of domestic life had built into it certain boundaries and it became in a sense its own prison.”

He continued: “We wanted to be sure, as we do every season, that we take Dexter somewhere new so he can discover new facets of humanity. It just felt that in that environment [of domesticity] he couldn’t.

“That relationship felt it went as far as it could. [Fans] were disappointed but we hope they’ll understand as the [new] season unfolds. We were very sorry to lose Julie Benz.”

Benz, who guest starred in Desperate Housewives, is now a regular in No Ordinary Family.

Dexter‘s latest season just premiered in the US and airs on Showcase on November 25.

  1. It was a total shock but we thought she was a bit of a drainer anyway. Inspired writing it was, I doubt anyone saw that coming, however I wonder if there wasnt potential in Rita learning what she wanted to know after all – the Real Dexter. Season 4 was the best season yet, Im sure the writers have some great stuff in store.

  2. I dont think I have read a single comment on people upset about Rita’s death. Most people have seen the potential for change in the awesome season 4 finale, and most agree that as awesome as Season 4 was with Trinity, Rita definatly was holding Dexter back. No way that story could have gone on for longer than a season.

  3. I liked Rita and it was a shame to see her go but IMO it only strengthened the show; it proves that it is a show that doesn’t rest on what it knows and that it is constantly willing to go to a new level; The writers of Dexter are amongst the best on television The season 5 opening episode was fantastic and looks set to be another brilliant season!

  4. @ Dick… I don’t think Rita was always annoying. But I agree she definitely was in S4. The writers purposely made her annoying in S4 to avoid fans of the show becoming too upset. Funny but true

  5. The producers shouldn’t feel any need to defend one of the best twists ever on television. Dexter is a fantastic show, so well written, well acted and continues to push the boundries.
I am very excited to see what the future holds for Dexter in season 5!

  6. It was a breathtaking ending to the season … I was completely shocked and surprised … but I was suspicious when she appeared in the previous season of Desperate Housewives … just did not think they would do it … can’t wait to see where Dexter goes this season!

  7. I was actually glad when they killed her off because her character was annoying as hell. Any Dexter fans who are upset that they got rid of her really don’t deserve to be watching this show because they fail to grasp what this show is really about.
