Election result: News update

ABC, SKY News, Seven, Nine and TEN cover live statements by the Independents as two of them pledge support for Julia Gillard to form Government.

Breaking news: Bob Katter will support a Coalition government…. but says he may retract his support should Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott decide to go with Labor.

UPDATE: Tony Windsor pledges support for Labor. Rob Oakeshott supports Labor which means Julia Gillard can now form Government.

At 2pm ABC and SKY News are covering Bob Katter’s announcement as audio.

At 3pm the Independents will make an announcement on their support.

The conference was also covered by ABC, SKY, Seven, Nine and TEN.

ABC1 and ABC News 24 will cover today’s political developments, live around the country from 2pm AEST, when the announcement by the three federal Independents is expected to start.

ABC News 24 will present special coverage of the action and reaction in Canberra, simulcast live on ABC1 and ABC News 24.

It is likely the Leader of the chosen party and the Leader of the unsuccessful party will then hold successive press conferences, which will also be broadcast live.

Viewers can find ABC News 24 on HD digital channel 24. It is also available on HD Foxtel channel 202, and Austar channel 024; streamed live at abc.net.au/news and abc.net.au/iview; and available as a live stream on the ABC’s iPhone and iPad Apps.

  1. The shortest serving (selected) Prime Minister deserved to get short changed we need a new Bollard (poll) to sort this out. The coalition of the billing will fall.

  2. Herald Sun says today Channel Ten Melbourne received 30 calls from viewers complaining The Bold and The Beautiful was pre-empted for the live coverage of the Julia Gillard press conference.

  3. Great three years of the whacky doo greens having all the say..
I don’t care that it’s a labour win. Just Wished they didn’t have to rely on those idiots

  4. As soon as Windsor made his announcement, Oakshott’s vote and the end result was obvious.

Oakshott obviously wasn’t going to vote for a deadlock.

(Also interesting that Crook, another independent who detached from the Coalition, has been relatively ignored. The two independents siding with the Coalition but Crook not part of the minority government would result in a still unresolved political situation.)

  5. Oakeshott seems to have picked up a few tips from Master Chef or Australian Idol: String out the big announcement for as long as possible.

I was tearing my hair out waiting for him to get to the point. lol.

  6. ABCs coverage was also live on the Australia Network. Big props to ABC. I watched this afternoons announcements on their iPhone app (which provides a live stream). I don’t think any of the other channels provide a live stream on the Internet (or a mobile device)

  7. David that Austar 024 one is a little misleading as that’s for MyStar when you have access to your local FTA channels, ABC News 24 is not on Austar via satellite, as far as I know, correct me if I’m wrong.

  8. The people have spoken…we can’t tell the difference between the parties. hope they have learned a lesson and that now policies win elections and not polls. Just hope Julia can come up with the goods, compensate people after the home insulation debacle and radically reform the asylum seeker process to be fair and humane. And bring decent politics to our parliament.
