GEM releases its Guide just a day after its announcement, with block programming across its schedule in a pitch to your feminine side.

  1. Clearly I’m the wrong demo…. but this channel looks shocking!
I just can’t believe it. So rushed, in an attempt to be the first ones out to market.
I’m convinced that Nine is not taking multichanneling seriously with this woeful schedule.

Aside from Weeds at 10pm!! on a Wednesday…. not one show worth watching.

Please let Seven and Ten have a better third offering. Embarrassing!

  2. As I am male under 35, I won’t be watching this channel, but I’m still pleased to see that WIN, NBN and 9 Darwin are ready to go with it. Again 9 proves to be the best out of the three commercials at making their channels available to regional viewers.

  3. I still don’t understand why Nine’s main channel has nothing to offer women – it’s such a flaw in their programming strategy and explains why they routinely come third without GO!. Having GEM is just more wallpaper over what is not working on the main channel – intelligent programming for a discerning female audience.

  4. ABC has 4 channels now, as of several weeks ago.

The movies on this channel are slightly different to usual offerings, but look at what happens to movies on go! (that’s my exclamation mark, not theirs 😉 ) Bumped at the last minute for repeats of Big Bang Theory, so who knows if movies will air when they’re supposed to, given this is another 9 channel.

This just amounts to yet another channel of repeats and “not good enough for primary channel”. I agree there should be more theme channels – movies, doco’s, music, etc. When 11 launches we will have 15 FTA channels, yet only 3 will be themed (One, ABC news 24, and ABC3 for kids), the other 12 being virtually indiscernable from each other (primary channels will have less repeats of course, 🙂 but otherwise the same kinda mix). Personally would like to see a music channel, and along the lines of rage rather han along the lines of video hits, etc. (if you’ve got 24 hours a day, you can show more than just the top 40 style clips). A doco channel would also be excellent.

To those who would say “get Foxtel”, I already have it, and would love to not have to have it. The number of FTA channels goes from 5 to 15, and yet I still need cable to get the variety I want?? Why do we have 15 FTA channels if I’m still gonna need cable? Talk about wasted opportunity. One and ABC are the only ones taking it to Foxtel…

  5. But Go! isn’t one signal. It’s almost always the same schedule, but has different ads, so they carry seperate satellite signals for it on the Foxtel satellite.

In addition, they sometimes show different content, like during the tennis when they showed the AFL footy show on Go! in Sydney but not in Melbourne (where it was live on Nine anyway).

Not saying that GEM won’t be a single signal, just saying that Go! isn’t.

  6. ABC was the first to have three channels! Have done so for 10 months now!

ooooh! Thursday 7:30pm “How Clean Is Your House?” That show is trash television and it’s hilarious! Glad to see it off UK.TV and on FTA (especially as I dumped pay TV back in February)

  7. @ salf….. sorry mate but u are wrong!! i think friday comes before saturday???
as i said…. nine will be the first to have 3 channels.
even thou the offical launch is sunday!! it’s still will be on air friday midday….

  8. Hi David

If the GEM channel is the same broadcast to all areas that receive the channel, does this mean that if GEM is showing live sport that it will be broadcast to all areas. For example Rugby League is rarely shown live in Victoria, however will this change now that HD sport will be shown on this channel instead of the standard channel 9.

  9. I guess its refreshing to see that GEM isn’t going for ratings straight out of the box.

It will be interesting to see what they play after the first couple of months on air after they replace all theses shows… 😉

  10. @ Jack, i agree with you re Exorcist, and there have been some good movies on GO. I haven’t seen Wicker Man but will give it a go. Will have to agree to disagree on Link though.

I still think that it would be nice to see some of those movies from the 80’s and early 90’s that i mentioned before, because i can’t remember the last time any of these have been on TV. As they are mostly aimed at women hopefully they will show some of them on GEM.

  11. I don’t see why people are complaining, It’s another free channel plus they are not locked into a set programing schedule, just look at GO! or even 7TWO they can move things around and add new shows or more movies if they find it’s not working. About the only digital HD channel locked into a theme is ONE with sport.

David which version of ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ do they have?

  12. The network bosses at Channel 7 & 9 must not want high ratings for 7mate & GEM.
Both channels are showing many repeats and average shows but enough tv advertising will cover the cost of running these digital stations. Money talks / viewers will suffer
