Gruen Transfer gets the Big Sell overseas

The Gruen Transfer has been picked up by US format distribution company, Fox LOOK.

ABC’s The Gruen Transfer is set to springboard to the world.

The show has been picked up by US format distribution company, Fox LOOK, a division of Fox Networks Group.

It will be renamed The Big Sell and is likely to be hawked at trade fair MIPCOM in Cannes next month.

The Zapruder’s Other Films show has been going from strength to strength, netting big audiences not only during the Election campaign, but afterwards.

FOX Look is under the direction of Aussie ex-pat David Lyle.

“As an Australian working in the international TV business, I have been very aware of how well The Gruen Transfer has done in beating the opposition, season after season,” he said. “A smart, witty, contemporary show that demonstrates such strength deserves to be an international hit. Just as Australia’s success with Masterchef turned heads elsewhere, so The Big Sell should be Australia’s next big export success.”

  1. I think the only problem with it on a commercial network is the impartiality. The whole show is just ads, those that are featured may get negative comments but they certainly get exposure with people actually paying attention instead of trying to ignore them. Brand names are mentioned and many of the ads on the show I have never seen or noticed before and now I do. I don’t think advertisers would have a problem with this show, it achieves a lot of what they attempt to do but often fail at. Even if there are negative comments some also get positive ones, and any attention is good attention often in the advertising world. The Ad firm executives wouldn’t appear on the show if their clients were really angry about it. The biggest problem I think will be if advertisers try to get on there or pay for positive comments, the integrity of the show will have to be established if it is on a commercial network.

I’m in this category – I had never even watched a single episode of this show prior to the election campaign when I saw a couple of episodes of Gruen Nation. Now I’m a fan and catch it every week. Hope the attempted launch in the US goes well for them.

  3. love the show, but isnt it going to struggle to get sales to advertiser funded TV channels.

I know the BBC tried to make a UK version of the show, but couldnt get any of the UK ad agencys to take part, that was dissapointing, would have loved to have seen that.
