Helpmann Awards: winners

TV winners at the country's top performing arts awards included Wil Anderson, Michala Banas and Alison Whyte.

The 2010 Helpmann Awards last night awarded TV names including Wil Anderson (Best Comedy Performer), Michala Banas (Best Female Actor in a Musical) and Alison Whyte (Best Female Actor in supporting role in a Play).

So You Think You Can Dance
and Ultimate School Musical: Fame‘s Kelley Abbey won Best Choreography in a Musical for Fame The Musical.

The opera Bliss, which was broadcast by ABC2, also picked up several awards.

Anderson dedicated his award to his parents whom he says were surprised when he left the family farm to tell ‘d**k jokes for cash.’

“Now they can say I tell Helpmann Award winning d**k jokes for cash,” he laughed.

The Helpmann Awards, hosted by David Campbell, were broadcast live on STVDIO and will be repeated next Monday with additional coverage.

  1. The In Memoriam segment was the longest in the whole show – terrible how many people the industry lost in the last 12 months. The staging was pretty awful – no set for presenters, just a flat, and no ambience save for the production numbers. David was a good host, charming and energetic.
