Is House about to jump the shark?

Spoiler: House looks like it is resolving long underlying tension. Check out this promo scene.

Is House about to jump the shark? Or is it taking a fascinating new turn?

Remember what killed off Moonlighting….. resolved sexual tension.

The promo poster for this season features Hugh Laurie having an operation on his heart with the words “Love / Sick.”

The show returns to TEN next Wednesday at 8:30pm.

  1. “jumping the shark” usually means a show is past it’s prime, and is making desperate grabs at holding on to the audience ratings but is on the downhill slope… it actually is derived from an episode of Happy Days after it’s ratings began to decline, they had the Fonz jump a shark tank on his motorcycle.

  2. A show ‘jumping the shark’ is subjective, and the term itself applies to the rediculous – who can actually jump over a shark?!? I dont think this applies to House at the moment, but its entirely possible their relationship could fizzle. You dont know until you try. I think the show has gone long enough and been through enough for this to be attempted now.

Agreed with koverstreet re: House deserving some happiness, but definatly dont see this panning out the way we expect. Its a long fall from great happiness… 🙂 i want to be watching when that happens…

  3. Jumping the shark would be if they all went to Los Angeles and House won a motor bike race around swimming pool full of medical litigation lawyers.

Providing he doesn’t forge a meaningful relationship as an outcome, I can’t see this being out of character.

  4. Jumping the sharks means the show has peaked and can only go downhill. Once sexual tension has been resolved then there is no need to keep watching. Moonlighting is one great example.

  5. Doesn’t ‘jumping the shark’ imply ridiculous, improbable plot lines?
What’s improbable or ridiculous about House & Cutty getting it on?
I think protracted U.S.T. ultimately annoys viewers (Ross n Rachel, Daphne n Niles, etc etc etc), while there’s still plenty of other characters for House to irritate.

Mind you, resolved U.S.T. is also a good spot to end a series, as evidenced by Alan Shore and Denny Crane in Boston Legal ; )

  6. All shows are different and what killed Moonlighting will be the total opposite for House. Besides other things contributed to Moonlighting’s decline not the least the two stars hated each other. I for one think House is better then ever. S6 was brilliant and I’m looking forward to how the House/Cuddy relationship pans out. House can only self destruct so many times and for once he deserves some happiness.

  7. No, I’m quietly confident the writers can deliver entertainment. There is more to work with House and the show than this relationship. It looks quite fun. And if the show does “jump the shark” at least we get Hugh Laurie shirtless for it. Yes I am that shallow.

  8. What was Lisa Simpson’s comment the other week while watching tv: “Shhh! I can’t hear House’s fourth false diagnosis that almost kills the patient before coming up with the right answer at the last minute.” Says it all really.

  9. Is there any chance you can change the opening picture of the video? Having 2 semi naked people on my work desktop is not a good thing! I don’t mind, but other people around my office certainly do.

  10. It really would be a tragedy if LACs originality claimed Rush’s scalp that’s for sure. That would be just wrong in so many ways. Rush’s demos are fine, it’s just hard to keep coming up with enough stories for a fourth series. Also wonder about cast renewals… I look forward to the adrenaline rush every week.

  11. I hate this whole “Jump the Shark” term I mean do viewers really want to watch for 5 more years with them not together or at least something happening between them.

I’m still a fan of the show and will keep watching.
