Oprah set to film in Sydney

Updated: Oprah Winfrey stuns audience by giving them all a trip to Australia in an episode to screen in Oz on Wednesday.

Oprah Winfrey is set to film two episodes of her talk show at the Sydney Opera House in December, bringing her audience with her,

“This is really my last chance to do something really big,” Winfrey told audiences at her season premiere. “And if you want to do something big, you would want to take along your ultimate viewers.”

“I started to think about where would I most want to go. Maybe I should take all of you with me to the other side of the world…We’re going to Australia! We are going to Australia! You and you and you and you, are going to Australia!” she added.

John Travolta then drove a makeshift Qantas plane onto the stage as confetti fell and the audience began screaming.

Updated: “We’ll sail Sydney Harbour, some will sample shiraz in Aussie wine country and others will shop ’til they drop in trendy Melbourne,” Winfrey told the delirious audience.

“We’ll get up close with kangaroos and koalas, kick back on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and experience one of the seven wonders of the world – the Great Barrier Reef.

“Then we’ll all meet at the spectacular Sydney Opera House, where thousands of our Aussie ultimate viewers will join us for an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime Oprah Show experience.”

As the first episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show to be filmed outside the US, it will form part of her last ever season.

Aussie guests are tipped to include Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett, Cathy Freeman and Baz Luhrmann.

Julia Gillard could also be interviewed, plus Jessica Watson, astronaut Andy Thomas and writers Thomas Keneally, Peter Carey and Tim Winton.

The audience will participate in an “Australian adventure” in the Outback.

The NSW Government is said to be contributing more than $1 million towards the accommodation costs of the 450 people that will accompany Winfrey, including the audience.

UPDATE: TEN has fastracked this episode, set to air at 1pm Wednesday. Entertainment reporter Angela Bishop will also interview Winfrey this week for TEN News, The Circle and The 7PM Project.

  1. The woman is a billionaire (literally). She has more money than NSW (figuratively), yet we are to be stuck with paying out millions to bring her brand of particularly ugly Americana to our shores? What’s up with that?

How is this supposed to benefit the state of NSW? Are Oprah’s audience going to spend more than that while here? Does anyone seriously think the exposure is likely to result in any measurable uptick in tourism from one of the most economically recessed western economies at the moment? The Americans who watch and worship Oprah are the ones least likely to have the money to come to Australia, they’re all either currently unemployed or threatened with it at the moment. Her audience is totally the wrong demographic for our tourism industry, so why are we paying for her?

  2. I Knew that NTSC OB Van would come in handy one day !!! shame it will be travelling to the Sydney Opera House at 40kph…

And Hey I’d love to do a deal with KK to go towards some accomodation… $2222.22 would be nice !!! shezz for that price I might even get to stay on the same floor as Kevin 747…

  3. Oh, the oestrogen! Spotted one guy in the audience who looked absolutely bewildered. He’ll be a shadow of his former self after that plane trip. Qantas’ll probably do very well out of this, though.

  4. @GuanoLad: this is what Oprah told the audience, according to the AAP report: “We’ll sail Sydney Harbour, some will sample shiraz in Aussie wine country and others will shop ’til they drop in trendy Melbourne.”

  5. For those asking about tickets, Channel Ten news just announced that details will be given during October – yep you will need to watch the show at 1.00pm everyday I guess to get the info.

The announcement show will also be aired on 10 tomorrow at 1.00pm.

  6. pfft, we have to foot the bill for her “generosity”.

how about some aussie musicians. shes done a lot for people like charice.

seems like the same old stale faces are going to be highlighted again.

  7. Dinah Shore, Bryant Gumbel, Jane Pauley and Willard Scott, Charlie Gibson and Joan London. They’ve all done it before Oprah. It’s great adverising for our tourism industry. The difference this time is that most yanks couldn’t afford to holiday in their own country this Summer (hence the current low oil prices), so they’re hardly going to be able to afford to jump on the flying kangaroo and head down under.

  8. It’s a great coup for NSW, but the locals should also be able to watch the taping of both shows. And will Channel Ten (which has the rights to Oprah) fast-track the two episodes in January, even screening them in primetime?
