Reality check for Nine

The Block premieres to half the figures it once enjoyed in its glory days, while The Boss is Coming to Dinner also lands third.

It’s been plugged as the highest rating series in OzTAM ever, but last night the new series of The Block had to settle for third place, netting 1.13m.

The revived reality series was defeated by new episodes of Border Security on 1.46m and fastracked Glee with 1.23m.

The Block’s 1.1m is just half the average of its first season. While nobody would have expected it to repeat its glory days, Austalia’s fascination with renovations has clearly shifted in the six years it has been off air.

Once again The Gruen Transfer (1.44m) an Spicks and Specks (1.42m) were unstoppable, both winning their timeslots for the ABC.

The Force also returned with 1.4m, helping City Homicide to cross the 1m barrier.

New reality series The Boss is Coming to Dinner was served a cold meal of 788,000, in third place behind new House on 905,000.

The margin between Sunrise and Today is widening -432,000 to 299,000 in Seven’s favour.

Seven won the night.

  1. I was watching Glee and watching the Block in ad breaks, so my judgement isn’t completely whole show accurate, but I felt it was overloaded with product placement. Yes, of course this where the money is made for Nine but it becomes more advertorial for paints, wood cutters etc.

Also, it’s only week one but it felt more organic last time around. The place was dirty, the camera almost felt dirty and the people were in appropriate clothing for renovation, not a magazine spread. Also, the casting is key. The years when it worked included cast members like Waz and Gaz and Andrew Rochford. So I guess, editing well to highlight the cast.

  2. Today thinks Melbournians like me are going to watch their clap trap. No thanks. I mean Graeme Richardson [Richo] did say to Kochie in a Political interview before the election he was always watching them, even through he worked at nine! I tell you today is just not as good as it was 6-8 years back. It collapsed after The weather man, Ian the newsreader, Steve and Tracy left! It became too different. And also for the fact Sunrise does have a City studio, that allows them to go out into the street and they are more interactive with people and the audience. Example is they give money away from a cash cow or have offers as part of the Sunrise Family. Today is filmed in a studio in the suburbs, that people are tired of. A major revamp might do it some revival! Maybe a new studio in the city of Melbourne? They seem to like it! Or Snag an Oprah interview!

  3. I don’t see how u can draw complete conclusions about Australias interest in the block from 1 episode, david. They haven’t even started the interesting part yet, building/designing the rooms!
