Seven strikes a note on Monday

As one of the best singers is sent packing, The X Factor enjoys a modest boost. And where are all the women in Adelaide?

For a Monday night, audience figures seem a bit soft. But there was some encouraging news for some shows.

The X Factor won its timeslot with 1.12m viewers while one of the strongest singers in the contest, James McNally, was sent home. Ronan Keating didn’t seem especially keen to play along with the format which required him to decide between two of his own singers. His vote forced a tie which took the result to the public vote. Why didn’t it just go to a public vote in the first place?

Without the Brownlow to compete with, the show improved considerably on last week’s 978,000 and even bettered the average it netted on Sunday’s performance show. It beat Two and a Half Men (1.07m) and Undercover Boss (1.0m).

Australian Story did great business on 1.06m, second in its slot.

However the premiere of The Event at 1.08m doesn’t look like being the next big thing just yet. Are we now too cynical after so many high-concept dramas promised so much without following through? It is also difficult to compare against Nine and TEN offerings given neither had direct one hour shows across all cities.

Good News Week was 780,000, Rescue Special Ops (3 cities only) was 512,000 and Nine’s movie Marley and Me (2 cities) averaged 365,000. Four Corners impressed with 874,000 helping ABC to beat TEN for the night in network share. Having two channels instead of 3 or 4 will bite until Eleven arrives.

Hot Seat was 100,000 up on Deal or No Deal.

7mate’s Whacked Out Sports pulled 135,000 while The Fugitive on GEM was 113,000 -OzTAM still reports a 0 in Adelaide for GEM. Where are all the women in Adelaide? In ratings share it’s still close: 2.1% for 7mate and 2.0% for GEM.

Seven won the night.

  1. X Factor is extremely hard to watch.Luke Jacobs is a dreadful host.Feel like i am watching a funeral service.Where is the spark?
Definately the wrong singer left & the judges do seem uninterested.
What was with Mitchell having to peform that Baby song?He is capable of singing much more mature material even though he is 16.He has a great voice but as usual the songs picked are wrong & they sing them in the same vein as the originals.A big B for boring.

  2. Seven screwed me over with Fast Forward last year (eventually ending the series in an early Friday morning slot). I’m predicting that The Event will do the same, and as such am not watching it.

If it does rate well, hopefully they’ll repeat the series on 7two or 7mate over the summer non-rating months.

  3. The Event: I was getting sick of all the ads for it … they had a lot!
I have, as with most things I want to watch, taped it and will watch it later in the week … as do a lot of people. Wait for Hawaii Five-0 … I loved it!!!
X Factor: They go on too long with all the unnecessary “drama” … and there are a few still remaining who do not deserve to be there … Altyan being the main offender! Again, having the two best voices at the bottom mad me so frustrated that I turned it off … again!!!

  4. The promotion for The Event on Seven was shown a lot. I found the show to be tedious and boring, I think it could get better from what occured at the end, but more likely turn into a FlashForward and plummet.
Seven should fasttrack Desperate Housewives, this is a very promising season.
Good news for Family Guy/7Mate. The new series which aired in the US on Sunday night commenced in 16.:9 HD.

  5. 1.1m is still a huge disappointment for Seven who would have been expecting something like 1.5m at least. Fact is except for rusted on Seven fans no one really cares.

  6. i agree with andrew to a degree, the advertising was quite small but there was plenty in the final week leading up to the pemier. again we have to question the harm of fasttracking. i think it would have done much better figures if it wsa February premier in Austraia.

bit of shock from X factor. we could really do without some of them but james n amada were some of the better ones.

  7. I deliberately didn’t watch The Event because even if it is good and has good ratings there’s no way that Seven will keep playing it in the same time slot on consecutive weeks – eventually they’ll screw with the scheduling somehow and I’m just not prepared to chase them around like they want me to. I’d rather wait and listen to the buzz about the show then rent or buy it on DVD depending on what I hear. The only things I watch live to air now are news, the dramas I really don’t care that much about (so don’t care if I miss an episode or not) and Wednesday nights on Aunty.

As for this woman over 35 in Adelaide – old episodes of Friends and Meg Ryan rom coms don’t really do it for me I’m afraid – haven’t even checked to see if my TV tuner has found GEM

  8. hmm.. found ‘the event’ a bit.. well, bland.. felt a bit try-hard wannabe lost but maybe that’s to be expected..

if i remember, i might watch it again, but definitely not on must-watch list.. though not much is these days.. apart from amazing race! c’mon!

  9. Wait, The Event was on tv last night? There was not one piece of advertising for it. starting yesterday.

If Seven wants us to watch new programs – Advertise them.
